WTF?

Karl Rove to resign at end of month
He needs to spend more time with his family:
“I just think it’s time,” Rove told The Wall Street Journal. “There’s always something that can keep you here, and as much as I’d like to be here, I’ve got to do this for the sake of my family.”
My first thought: Heaven help us, what’s Karl Rove going to be doing now that’s so much worse than what he’s been doing that it has to be done under the radar?
It’s too much to hope that Jason Leopold will be vindicated.

The following possibilities spring to mind:
1) He wants to preserve what’s left of his standing as a “Boy Genius” (as opposed to a vote-fraud practitioner), and he can’t do that if he goes down with Bush’s ship. Yet he had to wait until after the memory of his titanic humiliation in the 2006 elections was no longer quite so fresh in the public mind.
2) He really has been indicted.
3) Some of his enemies in the RNC got pictures of him cruising the beaches of Fire Island.

OMG, he has a family? These people could all star in horror movies, ’cause all they’d have to do is, act naturally!

Emptywheel over at The Next Hurrah has some rather nice and nicely informed speculation.

Remember what Rove does best: getting horrible candidates into office (see the TX leg.,for example. Watch to see if he takes over one of the current rethug candidates campaigns next month. Rove in the Whitehouse was bad, but he’s much more dangerous on the campaign trail.

My Bad Thought about Rove’s resignation is that he’s going to go work for Mitt Romney’s campaign.

Or maybe he just has to “return” to the private sector to be able to pay his son’s college tuition. Government jobs pay so poorly, dontchaknow.

Why demonize jason leopold? Did you ever once consider that leopold was right and possibly bigger forces at work here that undermined leopold? Did you ever stop to consider that leopold was dragged through the mud by the left because that’s exactly what the plan was? Leopold is a damn good reporter and there is no way rove and his ilk would have wasted time with leopold if that weren’t the case. There are people in the blogosphere namely markos who took rove’s bait and villianized leopold. Markos and the kos community even went so far as to ban people from posting leopold articles calling it conspiracy theory. That is beyond ridiculous. Leopolds work before and after his rove story have been very good and before people dismiss him they should actually read him before subscribing to the mob mentality. I should remind people that it was leopold who first reported before anyone in the US media about cheneys involvement in the plame leak and that he was under investigation. See for yourself by doing a google search. He was way ahead and it took a year before anyone caught up. I just think its ignorant to continue to try and discredit leopold. His rove story came out more than a year ago and he’s done a lot of good work since then.

My theory is he’s resigning because summer is when roaches are most active.
Resigning in August is the moment when it receives the least public attention. Parents are running around getting kids ready for school. People are moving. People are on vacation. Congress is on recess.
But emptywheel had it right. The USDoJ scandal is burning a lot too close to the White House. Rove can continue to claim executive privilege for past conversations with Bush, but now he’s Mr. Rove, rather than Assistant to the President Rove.

CJChenier, you missed the point of the post. It was not to detract from Leopold. It was to say that Leopold published a story saying Rove was about to be indicted. Phoenix Woman hopes that Rove will be indicted, which would also vindicate Leopold, but she doubts that fate will be so kind.
Or at least that’s what I read from the comment.

Jeez. My bad. I totally misinterpreted the post. I am so sorry folks.

No prob, CJ. We’re all on hair triggers lately.

Thanks, Phoenix and apologies again.
I hope someone has something on Rove

I have a bunch of possible reasons listed also in my post at http://youthinkleft.com/2007/08/13/whats-the-deal-with-karl-rove/

Cjchenier, as Charles explained, what I meant was it was too much to hope that we’ll be hearing about an unsealed indictment, because so far Rove has managed to evade justice and there aren’t any rumors about new developments. I didn’t intend to cast aspersions on Jason Leopold, whom I thought went a little too far out on a limb with that story, but has done very solid journalism in his career and doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

MEC, I am very sorry for misrepresenting your post and knee-jerking with my response.

No prob, CJC.
Please believe me when I say we get a lot worse and for even less reason.

‘Sokay, Cjchenier. I was being flippant and it’s my own fault if my post could be misinterpreted.

I am going to go out on a limb here. I think that if anyone has a direct line to joe wilson and a direct line to Robert Garcia and Rebecca Abrahams at ABC News you would find that those three people had direct indpendent evidence that Pat Fitzgerald did meet with Rove at Patton Boggs as Truthout/leopold reported.
I know this directly from the attorney at ABC News who worked with Garcia and Abrahams on the story. Abrahams and a camera crew were staked ouit in front of patton boggs on the evening of may 11 I believe and she tried to get into the bldg but was turned away by secret service. She had the story about what happened and took it to garcia! Her bureau chief. They prepared a report and because she did not have enough sources the story was killed. It is my understanding that ABC corp attorneys weighed in on this as well. My colleague is one of the ABC attorneys who relayed this to me. Neither Abrahams nor Garcia has weighed in on this and allowed Leopold to twist in the wind. Same goes for Joe Wilson who was also told by someone he knew at Patton Boggs of what happened.
My point is, this was the impetus for my knee jerk reaction. I sincerely hope an astute blogger or reporter follows up because the public should at least be aware that truthout did not invent this story and did have the sources they said they had.

Cjchenier, would it be correct to assume you are a friend of Jason Leopold’s?
cjchenier said
no. actually, i am not a friend of Leopold in the classic sense. i do not speak with him either on the phone or email and we do not socialize as I love in Washington and he resides on the west coast.
