The Goreacle
Posted by Phoenix Woman on August 27, 2007

From an e-mail sent by Robert “Consortium” Parry:
Having written several books that span periods of years, I’m often surprised how patterns emerge that aren’t apparent to me in day-to-day news coverage. In Neck Deep, our new book about George W. Bush’s presidency, one of those surprises was how often former Vice President Al Gore turned up making tragically prescient comments.
.
.
Gore, whose admirers sometimes call him “the Goracle,” comes across more as a Cassandra, warning the nation of looming disasters and finding himself either ignored or mocked by the dominant politicians and media pundits.
.
.
Time and again – from Campaign 2000 to the post-9/11 “war on terror” to the invasion of Iraq to Bush’s expansion of presidential powers – Gore pointed to grave dangers when nearly all other national political leaders and media bigwigs were either running with the herd or keeping silent.
.
.
In our daily coverage of those political developments at Consortiumnews.com, we’d run stories citing Gore’s speeches, but it wasn’t until we pulled together the book that Gore’s extraordinary role jumped out.
.
.
Though there were a few other political leaders who made prophetic comments, such as Sen. Robert Byrd in his pre-Iraq War speeches on the Senate floor, none was as consistently on target as Al Gore.
.
.
Indeed, a poignant aspect of Neck Deep is the recognition that a less hostile press treatment of Gore during Campaign 2000 or a full-and-fair recount of votes in Florida after Election 2000 might have put the United States on a very different track.
.
.
Hearing Gore’s nuanced advice about how to proceed after the 9/11 attacks, why invading Iraq made little sense or what are the proper limits of presidential power, you can’t help but wonder where the United States would be now if the popular will of the American voters had been respected in November-December 2000.
.
.
There’s a good chance that more than 3,700 American soldiers would be alive today, along with hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. The United States also might not be faced with the horrible choice of either continuing an open-ended occupation of Iraq or withdrawing troops with the prospect of a sectarian war engulfing the Middle East.
.
.
Even if Gore and his national security team could not have prevented the 9/11 attacks – and there’s a case to be made that they might have – President Gore surely would have focused American retaliation on Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, not left the job half done and gone after Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11.
.
.
Gore didn’t buy into the neoconservative agenda of invading Muslim countries to impose regime change designed to bring those governments in line with Israel’s goals for the region. Though a supporter of Israel who picked Sen. Joe Lieberman as his vice presidential running mate, Gore kept the neocon agenda at arm’s length.
No comment, because there’s really nothing more to add.

More “consistently on target”:
“[I]f you allow someone like Saddam Hussein to get nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, chemical weapons, biological weapons, how many people is he going to kill with such weapons? He’s already demonstrated a willingness to use these weapons; he poison gassed his own people. He used poison gas and other weapons of mass destruction against his neighbors. This man has no compunctions about killing lots and lots of people.” Vice President Al Gore – Larry King Live, December 16, 1998
“Remember, Peter, this is a man who has used poison gas on his own people and on his neighbors repeatedly. He’s trying to get ballistic missiles, nuclear weapons, chemical and biological weapons. He could be a mass murderer of the first order of magnitude. We are not going to allow that to happen.” Vice President Al Gore – ABC News’ “Special Report,” December 16, 1998
“We know that [Saddam] has stored away secret supplies of biological weapons and chemical weapons throughout his Country. We have no evidence, however, that he has shared any of those weapons with terrorist groups. Moreover, if we quickly succeed in a war against the weakened and depleted fourth rate military of Iraq and then quickly abandon that nation as President Bush has abandoned Afghanistan after quickly defeating a fifth rate military there, the resulting chaos could easily pose a far greater danger to the United States than we presently face from Saddam.” – Vice President Al Gore, Remarks to the Commonwealth Club of California, San Francisco, Calif., September 23, 2002
“Iraq’s search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power.”
– Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

And all of that would be relevant, Rick, had you not taken the Commonwealth speech out of context to pretend that it was not a clear opposition to the invasion:
Specifically, I am deeply concerned that the course of action that we are presently embarking upon with respect to Iraq has the potential to seriously damage our ability to win the war against terrorism and to weaken our ability to lead the world in this new century.
It would be relevant had the UN not sent in inspectors prior to the war who determined that the last vestiges of the weapons program were gone.
It would be relevant if the US had managed to persuade other nations, especially Arab nations and the Security Council, to join the coalition.
It would be relevant if in the rush to invade Iraq, Bush hadn’t allowed bin Laden to escape.
Unfortunately for you, none of it is relevant because Al Gore opposed the unilateral,contrary-to-the-evidence, undermanned, improperly equipped invasion George Bush mounted. You can lie as much as you like and you will not diminish Al Gore by a millimeter. But you do diminish yourself.

Thanks, Charles, for the quick debunking.
The point wasn’t that Saddam had WMDs. The point was occupying a mideast country would work no better for us than it has for the Israelis…it’s only a prescription for endless bloodletting.
The Israelis have now choice; it’s an existential question for them (though I think peacemaking and land-for-peace could increase their security).
For us, it was entirely optional. We will eventually leave, but only after many more $3Billion weeks.
Many more.
When I think about what might have been under President Gore, it’s hard to keep from tearing up.
We’d be respected around the world, Bin Laden would be dead or in prison, and many, many billions would have gone not into the pockets of mercenaries and scam artists, but into green energy sources. We’d have an electric grid like the internet, with millions of contributing energy-producers.

“No” choice.

Wow. Post four quotes and you are a liar. Nice little discussion you have going here.
Charles said
No, Rick. One deliberate or reckless misuse of a man’s words and you’re a liar.
Remember, you’re the guy who’s attacking the integrity of an honorable man. Using a lie to attack someone’s honesty is one of the lowest things of all.

Rick’s a Republican, Charles. They are the People of the Lie. They can’t handle the truth, which is why the gay ones don’t go to gay bars, but hang out in airport restrooms where kids could see them.
Steve Talbert said
You need to add that SOME ‘gay republicans hang out in airport restrooms where kids can see them’.
MOST DO NOT.
Most of the guys getting arrested for sex in men’s rooms are married with children and do not think of themselves as gay. They probably aren’t. Most actual gay people have more self respect. Besides, how do you fit all the lurking around and down time in a restroom with watching the View, Will & Grace and Sex & the City reruns, gym, drinks and shopping??!?!?

in addition to the facts already noted, that those weapons were known by the administrationto be eliminated, we also have to add where and how saddam aquired those weapons
they were sold by the reagan administration
the guy was friends with rumsfeld and cheney
bizzarre someone wants to bring up what saddam aquired under republican “forsight”

This Country has been the victim of a predatory marketing scam for 40 years.
The conservative message has NOT changed, only the packaging!
‘The tax BURDEN’, ‘islamic FACISTS’, ‘TAX and SPEND liberals’, it’s ALL a scam.
Progress and conservatism is in direct conflict. That’s why WE are called PROGRESSIVES.
Most Americans are liberal but have been sold a LIE!
The republican party is like a vampire sucking the life’s blood out of this Country and sucking the wealth to the top and the rest of us be damned. They can’t stand the light of day.
Get gov’t out of our bedrooms and churches and they lose most of their divisive strategies and are simply the WAR PARTY.
I was handed a sheet of paper by a repub with the title ‘Why Muslims can’t be good Americans’.
The man was a teacher and I told him that the conservative movement has a stack of papers like this and how far down did he think the paper that said ‘Why Teachers can’t be good Americans’.
To the conservative movement we are all expendable FOR THE CAUSE.
God Bless and protect the American Middle Class.

Once again, we are confronted with this antisemitic lie. There is no evidence whatsoever that George Bush and Dick Cheney, the Saudi’s best friends, have any interest in the security of Israel. The disaster in Iraq was motivated by purely self-serving imperial ambitions on the part of Republican leaders. To suggest otherwise is to willingly obscure the truth of the Bush administration’s crimes.

Amazing! Who knew that neoconservatives like George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were Jews?
Carl, Robert Parry’s point is that Israel is the primary ally and military partner of the United States in the Middle East. The neocons believed that attacking Iraq and establishing a shining example of democracy would transform the Middle East.
From all indications, Israel wanted the US to hit Iran, rather than Iraq. Iraq was also a secular nation. On those two points, Parry’s comment is not on point.
It is not anti-Semitic to criticize policy. The overuse of accusations of anti-Semitism, however, is very dangerous to Israel.

Israel STILL wants us to hit Iran.
The evangelicals want our alliance witn Israel to promote the rapture.
The unholy alliance of the Bush regime and the Saudis, the country of origin for the majority of 9/11 attackers, is treasonous.
We have armed every country in that region!
And it goes on and on.
The problem is that the American psyche has been bombarded to the point of numb with so many scandels that it makes it hard to focus on any one scandel. My God, where do you start when the Republicans have spent the last 20 years effectively corrupting every aspect of our government and everything they touch!
Charles said
You start where you think you can make a difference.

Not to mention Donald Rumsfeld and Ahmad Chalabi, the other key members of the PNAC Platoon.

The geo-political context we swim in can be clarified by reviewing a couple DVD’s. The first is The Corporation (DVD 2 w/full interviews is a must) thecorporation.com. The second A Crude Awaking: The Oil Crash. Listen closely and understand many neocons operate under the belief that a class based society is their saving grace. Rove masterminded the control and misleading of the faithful into promoting the deregulation of media and removal of the rule of law.
Rove was asked about his faith recently as he left the whitehouse and he again admitted he doe not believe there is a GOD. Read Rove’s and Chaney’s books and understand we are is exactly where they planned us to be. We will be made to compete with the global workers at the global markets wages.
These so-called persons of faith operate on a simple test to decide when to move out of a market, summarize by the following.
When you can no longer get a fantastic meal and the best tail available for less than 100 dollars, it’s time to move on to the next emerging market.
The very same groups that developed the defense for the tobacco industry has grownup and splintered off into hit firms. When you see replies on sites like this that repeat the drum beat of the machine, understand they are likely paid agents of these firms. So do not get discouraged. Know that GOD is on the side of truth. Those that call on the authority of GOD for their own purpose, are the very definition of witchcraft.
