“These guys just declared, before the school opened, that UC Irvine Law will never be a serious academic institution.”

Apparently UC Irvine likes kowtowing to wealthy conservative Republican buddies of Arnold Schwarzenegger (cough*Donald Bren*cough) better than it likes the idea of having a real school of law.
When Donald Bren’s name is dust — or perhaps noted only for his shameless greed and amorality – Erwin Chemerinsky‘s name will still be given a place of high honor in the pantheon of America’s great legal minds and Constitutional scholars.

Brian Leiter comments, “the reaction to this news is the same: UC Irvine has disgraced itself, and it will be hard-pressed to hire any Dean for the new law school at this point. (As one of my colleagues put it, what self-respecting law professor, let alone one with any scholarly stature, wants to go be an apparatchik answering to unknown political and/or monied interests behind the scenes?)”
It’s simple. Just hire somebody from Pepperdine.

You got it, MEC.
As Leiter and others have noted, what’s interesting about this is the near-unaminous reaction, from lefties and righties alike, about what an effing disaster this is.

The problem is that they’re doing this with public money. What they should do is send Chancellor Drake to Pepperdine and hire Chemerinsky to fill his post.
