Via Atrios, we learn that the question of who was pushing Pakistan toward a coup is suddenly of vital interest. David Rohdie and Salmon Masood, NYT:
The Pakistani leader, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, declared a state of emergency tonight, suspending the country’s constitution, blacking out all independent television news reports and filling the streets of the capital with hundreds of police and soldiers.
The main reason cited is activist judges. And, oh yeah… the Swat Valley is under Taliban control, with paramilitary forces sent in by the government surrendering voluntarily.
Bushco’s public pronouncements are that it has opposed the coup. Does anyone believe them?

Well it was obviously planned out in advance, they had Benazir Bhutto leave the country first and everything.

And by “oppose”, they mean, of course, “admire”, or perhaps “envy”.

I’ve got to figure that what all of these so-called leaders have in common is a fear of justice.
