Updates On The McCain Lobbyist Scandal

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 21, 2008

More on the story I mentioned last night:

– Biodun catches further updates to the NYT story on the lobbying part of the scandal angle.

– The Alcalde & Fay web page was scrubbed of all Iseman info, but not before the HuffPosties screengrabbed it (there’s also a cached version).

– Josh Marshall notes that McCain doesn’t actually come out and say that the story’s false or a lie. Anyone wanna bet which pundit’s the first to call this Nixon-style non-denial denial “Clintonian”?

UPDATE: Nearly a day after the story first broke and the McCain camp’s first set of non-denial denials, we get this carefully-couched and vague statement from McCain himself:

“I’m very disappointed in the article. It’s not true,” the likely Republican presidential nominee said as his wife, Cindy, stood alongside him during a news conference called to address the matter.

Um, what parts of it aren’t true, John? As MEC points out, it’s not just the sex angle that makes it so juicy. Plus, this won’t stop anyone that still remembers a red-faced Bill Clinton trying to shut down the Monica Lewinsky scandal by saying “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” when of course he was counting on us all to accept the old belief that “eatin’ ain’t cheatin’”.

UPDATE 2:  The WaPo took up the lobbying-corruption angle of this story back in December, when McCain first tried to shut it down.

Chris Matthews may not be the first, but I’ll make a donation to McCain’s campaign if he doesn’t say it.
