I Invoke Taibbi’s Law. Again.

Posted by MEC on June 12, 2008

Taibbi’s Law: “If nothing happens, then you can’t have ‘news’, because nothing has changed since the day before.” My corollary to Taibbi’s Law: “If something is completely obvious and predictable and unsurprising, it isn’t news.”

It is not news that not all Democrats are endorsing Barack Obama. When has the Democratic presidential candidate, or the candidate of any other party, had completely unanimous support within the party? But the Associated Press wants us to think this is a big deal.

Even though this AP story acknowledges that the Republican candidate also has less than universal support within his party, the Story must be about Democrats not supporting their candidate — even though this story acknowledges that the people withholding endorsements don’t intend to oppose Obama’s nomination, merely to keep a low profile to avoid hurting their own re-election chances in Republican-leaning districts.

I’m guessing the story is intended to “remind” us of all the division and conflict that [the Usual Suspects want us to believe] will cause the Democratic Party to defeat itself. There will always be a certain amount of disarray within the Democratic Party; that’s the nature of the party’s enduring political philosophy. As Will Rogers famously observed, “I am not a member of any organized party — I am a Democrat.” But there’s a lot less of it these days than The Usual Suspects want us to believe, so they have to churn out non-news stories like this one to reinforce their truthiness.
