Compare And Contrast
Posted by Phoenix Woman on June 23, 2008
Fortune magazine talked with the candidates and their advisors recently in some weird-ass quasi-debate format. Here’s how the two sides handled the very first question they were asked:
What do you see as the gravest long-term threat to the U.S. economy?
Obama: If we don’t get a handle on our energy policy, it is possible that the kinds of trends we’ve seen over the last year will just continue. Demand is clearly outstripping supply. It’s not a problem we can drill our way out of. It can be a drag on our economy for a very long time unless we take steps to innovate and invest in the research and development that’s required to find alternative fuels. I think it’s very important for the federal government to have a role in that process.
McCain: Well, I would think that the absolute gravest threat is the struggle that we’re in against Islamic extremism, which can affect, if they prevail, our very existence. Another successful attack on the United States of America could have devastating consequences. You’ve been a supporter of climate-change legislation that would essentially impose a penalty on the use of fossil fuel.
One person is acknowledging reality, the other is trying to push our fear-buttons because that’s all he’s got.

John McCain is inadvertently correct when he says the gravest threat to our economy is “the struggle that we’re in against Islamic extremism”. The war in Iraq and the Homeland Security boondoggle are siphoning away money that could be spent to support our infrastructure and create jobs instead of just to enrich GOP cronies at the taxpayers’ expense.

OMG. There once was a time when views like McCain’s were rightly relegated to the fringes of our culture.
Islamic extremists. Well, let’s see they have … oil (Saudi Arabia). And … oil (Iran, but a different sect of Islam, and also they are Persians, not Arabs, so don’t get along with the Saudis very well). Also … oil (Egypt, another flavor of Islam, but like Saudi their dictators are on our side).
What they don’t have: scientific knowledge (the extremists, like US religious fundamentalists, are anti-science); an industrial base (except oil refineries); non-oil resources like minerals or agriculture; any military to speak of; any manufacturing ability to build up their military (see earlier comment about lack of an industrial base); or a significant military or military budget.
Yet, some how, some way, McIdiot quakes in his boots with fear at these backwards, 3rd world, wackos and their ability to “affect our very existence”.
Sometimes I wonder if the Republican Party isn’t in reality run by paranoid, rich, militant Israelis. It would explain a lot.

There’s no reason to drag Israelis into it. The Republican Party is run by paranoid, rich, theocratic Christians. All Muslims are “extremists” because they are “the unbeliever” and therefore evil, dontchaknow.

I’m sorry that Obama stressed alternative fuels instead of energy efficiency. There should be minimum requirements for cars, appliances, etc.
According to an article in this weekend’s NYT, Obama has close ties to the ethanol industry–which is just as devastating to the environment as traditional fuels and has terrible ramifications for the agricultural industry.

Obama is a senator from Illinois, which likes biofuels a lot. Thing is, he’s also backing, as the NYT article mentions, transitioning to cellulosic ethanol, and he opposes importing Brazilian sugarcane ethanol — partly because it’s competition for the homegrown product, but also because Brazil’s rush to plant soy and sugarcane is the biggest threat to the Amazon rainforest next to beef ranching.
