Someone Tell McCain That If He Wants To Distract From Obama’s Landmark Speech…
Posted by Phoenix Woman on August 29, 2008
…it’s not really smart to use a besmirched item as your Bright Shiny Object:
It has been forty years since someone as inexperienced as Sarah Palin has been put on a national ticket, and surprisingly enough there are some real similarities between Palin and her unprepared predecessor, Spiro T. Agnew, who also had been governor less than two years at the time Richard Nixon picked him to be his number two and who also had a corruption problem lingering in the background that would end up causing his running mate problems.
Wow. Nothing like somebody that’s both inexperienced and corrupt at the same time. Twofer!
Here’s a taste of her latest shenanigans:
Gov. Sarah Palin on Wednesday revealed an audio recording that shows an aide pressuring the Public Safety Department to fire a state trooper embroiled in a custody battle with her sister.
Palin, who has previously said her administration didn’t exert pressure to get rid of trooper Mike Wooten, also disclosed that members of her staff had made about two dozen contacts with public safety officials about the trooper.
Heh!
Meanwhile, it looks like she’s trying to scrub some recent praise she had for Obama from the historical record:
On August 5, she sent out a press release applauding Obama’s embrace of natural gas and his plan to give $1,000 tax rebates to deal with rising energy costs. The link to the press release isn’t working — it looks like it was removed from the site — but Ben reported on it when it happened:
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin — occasionally mentioned as a McCain vice presidential prospect — has put out a press release praising Obama’s energy plan.
Alaska energy politics seem to trump national politics here, though it’s also interesting to see a red(dish) state Republican so willing to associate herself with the Democratic nominee.
“I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska‚s natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs,” Palin says in the release. “The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs.”
Scrub a dub dub, Governor Palin!

It’s unfair to Affirmative Action to call Palin an Affirmative Action hire, but she’s essentially a corporate answer to an image problem.
Unfortunately, I’m not as sanguine as PW on Palin. According to Wikipedia, Palinhas an 80% approval rating in Alaska as of July.
Granted, recent revelations may reduce those ratings, but she is viewed as a person of integrity. If Wooten did drive drunk in his patrol car or Taser an 11 year-old or even shoot a bull moose out of season, the fact that Palin didn’t want him on the force will not seem especially unusual. And, besides, so far it’s only an overzealous aide. When you have the counsel investigating the matter, a Democrat, say that the Governor is cooperating fully, it’s probably not going to go very far.
The comparison to Spiro Agnew, who was extremely experienced in taking bribes as a county executive, is a stretch. Palin is involved in a a family tiff, not bribe-taking.
I think she’s a brilliant, completely cynical choice, someone who will keep Republican women in the fold, satisfy the extremists who control the party, and confuse the general electorate. And as for the fate of the nation? The Republicans have already shown they don’t give a d–n what happens to America. They already installed a drunken deserter as president. What’s the big deal with installing a bright if completely unqualified woman as vice president?

Charles, Tim Pawlenty has a high approval rating, too — and he’s not tainted by scandal.
The media is already starting to pick Palin apart. The word “Quayle” is being bandied about.
Meanwhile, Barack Obama’s landmark speech last night was seen by 38 million viewers — more than watched the Oscars, the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics, or the final American Idol — and early indications are that it moved a number of fence-sitting people squarely into Obama’s camp.

PW, I hope you’re right. I’m glad to hear that people tuned in.
