Heart of darkness

Posted by Charles II on February 8, 2007

Simon Tisdall in The Guardian:

This week’s US decision to create a new Pentagon command covering Africa, known as Africom, has a certain unlovely military logic. Like Roman emperors of old, Washington’s Caesars arbitrarily divide much of the world into Middle Eastern, European and Pacific domains. Now it is Africa’s turn.Practical more than imperial considerations dictated the White House move. With Gulf of Guinea countries including Nigeria and Angola projected to provide a quarter of US oil imports within a decade, with Islamist terrorism worries in the Sahel and Horn of Africa, and with China prowling for resources and markets, the US plainly feels a second wind of change is blowing, necessitating increased leverage….

The Pentagon’s total budget requests for the fiscal year ending September 2008 have swollen to $716.5bn…

Follow the money

Posted by Charles II on February 8, 2007

From La Jornada

Pemex, the Mexican oil company, is #40 on the list of the largest businesses in the world and #11 on the list of petroleum companies. Its revenues were 84 Billion in 2006, and it employs 139,000 people. Due to rapine by the political class, it also ran in the red to the tune of $7 Billion (a cautionary tale to those who think that nationalization solves all problems). And so it finds itself needing $25B just to meet basic operational needs. The drop in world oil prices and declining productivity in the Cantarell field, which provides half of the production lead one to believe that the fault is lack of investment.

Declining production will be very bad for most Mexicans and most Americans. It will be very good for a handful of oil majors.

And The Gold Medal Winner In The Irony Olympics This Month Is…

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 8, 2007

George W. Bush, for his Olympic-quality skill in complaining about Hugo Chavez’ alleged abuse of power even as Bush himself was indulging in one of the biggest abuses of power in a White House tenure that has been all about abuse of power.

Priorities

Posted by MEC on February 8, 2007

When I got home from work, I turned on the TV to find out what the cable news networks are saying about the Libby trial. You know, the trial that revealed the extent of the Bushevik campaign to destroy Joe Wilson and his wife because Ambassador Wilson revealed Bush had lied in his State of the Union address.

Silly me. I didn’t consider that Anna Nicole Smith died today. It’s all Anna, all the time.

Dead Blonde Woman syndrome strikes again.

Let The Pushback Begin

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 8, 2007

Well, Edwards has said the gals are staying, so that’s done with.

Now it’s time to ask the media why they insist on enabling people like Bill Donohue by treating him as someone to take seriously, instead of as the crazy-ass Jew-baiting misogynist hatemonger he is.

The message from us: No one pulls this crap with impunity — someone, be it the person slimed or somebody else, will be coming around to dump it back threefold on the slimer.

Media Matters has lots o’ dirt, and here’s some more courtesy of Jeffrey Feldman:

DONOHUE MAY HAVE BROKEN LAW PROHIBITING INTERVENTION IN POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS

According to United States law governing the behavior of 501(c)(3) organizations, it seems highly likely that William Donohue–President of the Catholic League, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization–may have broken the law by attempting to intervene in a political campaign.

Hey, news media! Lookee here! An actual crime! Investigate!

And there’s also this: http://www.guidestar.org/FinDocuments/2005/237/279/2005-237279981-02602cea-9.pdf

It’s the 2005 tax return for Donohue’s Catholic League. Note the huge expenses for direct mail. Nonprofits do not have to publicly disclose their donor list so we don’t know where the revenue is coming from.

UPDATE:  Chris Bowers and BlogPAC have a handy-dandy device for contacting the media folks who’re writing about this story.  Enjoy!

“I Was Ordered To Resign”

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 8, 2007

Lapin over at DailyKos discovers that the recent spate of resignations among U.S. Attorneys is indeed, as suspected, revenge meted out by BushCo against honest professionals whose sole “crime” was doing their jobs too well.   Here’s John McKay:

“I was ordered to resign as U.S. attorney on Dec. 7 by the Justice Department…I was given no explanation. I certainly was told of no performance issues.”

Saddening, but not surprising.
