US Economy Leaving Record Numbers in Severe Poverty

The percentage of poor Americans who are living in severe poverty has reached a 32-year high, millions of working Americans are falling closer to the poverty line and the gulf between the nation’s “haves” and “have-nots” continues to widen.

.

A McClatchy Newspapers analysis of 2005 census figures, the latest available, found that nearly 16 million Americans are living in deep or severe poverty. A family of four with two children and an annual income of less than $9,903 – half the federal poverty line – was considered severely poor in 2005. So were individuals who made less than $5,080 a year.

.

The McClatchy analysis found that the number of severely poor Americans grew by 26 percent from 2000 to 2005.

[…]

The plight of the severely poor is a distressing sidebar to an unusual economic expansion. Worker productivity has increased dramatically since the brief recession of 2001, but wages and job growth have lagged behind. At the same time, the share of national income going to corporate profits has dwarfed the amount going to wages and salaries. That helps explain why the median household income of working-age families, adjusted for inflation, has fallen for five straight years.

“The economy” isn’t to blame for the increase in poverty. Blame Bush’s agenda: cutting the domestic spending that helps the poorest of us in order to give more tax cuts to rich people. Blame the “got mine, got yours too” philosophy that Bush’s policies encourage. It’s way beyond “benign neglect”: it’s active hostility toward the majority of the American people.

“The Chair Recognizes The Honorable Whackaloon From Minnesota…”

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 23, 2007

Good God, this is almost enough to make one wish for the return of Mark Kennedy:

Ahhh, this is fun. Whackjob member of Congress Michelle Bachmann, it turns out, has discovered that there’s already a plan in place to divide Iraq. Iran will get half the country. And they’ll set that part up as a “terrorist safe haven zone.”

.

Says Bachmann: “And half of Iraq, the western, northern portion of Iraq, is going to be called…. the Iraq State of Islam, something like that. And I’m sorry, I don’t have the official name, but it’s meant to be the training ground for the terrorists. There’s already an agreement made.”

.

I can’t wait to hear Juan Cole’s reaction to Bachmann’s scoop.

.

Shi’a Iran is going to run Sunni western Iraq as a terrorist safe haven. And the new terror country’s official name will be the Iraq State of Islam.

.

Aren’t the Shi’a Arabs in southern Iraq going to be a little bummed?

Cue the ’70s wakka-wakka guitar!

Vilsack Out

Ex-Iowa Gov. Vilsack ending ’08 bid

What the article does not mention about his decision to drop out is that he’s been getting flogged by liberal bloggers (Atrios, for example) for calling for a “reform” of Social Security that would undermine the system.

Hey, Michelle Malkin’s Getting A TV Show On FOX!

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 23, 2007

Seriously. Wingnut welfare in action!

If it’s anything like her blog, it should just be chock-full of the sort of stuff we can use for oppo.

I can’t wait for her to put Word Salad Pam from Atlas Shrugs on.  Boy oh boy, FOX’s people really are aiming for a demographically-desirable audience, aren’t they?  This is going to make it even harder for them to justify asking for higher ad rates.  (That, and their steady ratings decline over the past couple of years.)
