Firefox Is Your Friend…

…and mine. (Especially with the widgets issue.)

Dear IE users: WordPress is doing upgrades to their code that mess up how this site looks in IE if all the widgets in the sidebars are installed. Until these issues are fixed, go to the nearest friendly site that offers Firefox downloads and download the free web browser. You’ll like it a lot.

You will also run significantly lees risk of your Windows system being the next one to be added to a botnet than you will if you keep on using Internet Explorer.

Do you have any idea of the flights of verbal fancy that security people go on when they start talking about MSIE??

    Never mind.

Suffice to say that the information security community has been screaming “DUMP IE” at the top of their lungs for the last four or five years now.

  2. It doesn’t help that MSIE doesn’t even follow standard HTML/XML coding, but some bastardized version thereof.

    Yeah.

The MSIE standards issue is old news, but most assuredly worth bringing up again. If only because it tends to remain in “techie-arcana” land, when ordinary non-techies need to know about it.

It’s also just exactly the sort of thing you get when an industry “800 pound gorilla” allows Marketing to trump the engineers on a regular and continuing basis.

The marketing guys at MS, all of whom sport dorsal fins and two inch recurved serrated fangs, have a mantra that goes like this:

    “Embrace, extend, engulf”.

This is what they do to, for instance, networking standards.

There is problem when this fails, for everybody else: their “extensions” do not become the new standard.

The good news is that they fail to get the monopoly that was their design intent.

The bad news is that the tool with all those neatsy-keen “extensions” that break the protocol is still out there, in use. And MS will never, ever admit that they were wrong in the first place by fixing its braindamage.
