The Silver Lining To The Libby Scam

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 2, 2007

Bush and Cheney have tacitly admitted that a) the GOP is going to go down in flames next year anyway, b) they don’t give a rat’s ass about what happens to the GOP so long as they themselves stay out of prison, or c) both.

Check out the SUSA polling figuresRepublicans don’t like this deal.  And Indies despise it as much as Democrats do.

A long train of abuses. Bush seizes judicial power, obstructing justice in the Libby case

Posted by Charles II on July 2, 2007

Please post your obscenities below. I am trying to swear off swearing and therefore have nothing to say except read this and this.

Update: One piece of good news. Olbermann named Bush the Worst Person in the World and plans to do a special comment calling on both Bush and Cheney to resign.

Impeach by supporting Jim McDermott

Posted by Charles II on July 2, 2007

Jim McDermott is one of the most decent members of Congress. A physician who served in Vietnam, he has been the first senior member of Congress to sign onto the impeachment of Dick Cheney.

He was also the man who busted Newt Gingrich for attempting to frustrate the ethics charges that were lodged against Gingrich. McDermott released to the New York Times a tape of the conversation made by a Florida couple. That tape had Gingrich, John Boehner, and others discussing how they would respond to the ethics charge, in violation of Gingrich’s agreement. McDermott was sued in civil court by Rep. Boehner, famous for passing out tobacco lobby checks on the floor of the House just ahead of a vote.

Boehner prevailed at the appellate level by a single vote. Even David Sentelle, appointer of Ken Starr, wouldn’t vote to sustain this wrongful verdict.

The costs of fighting a decade-long legal battle have been enormous. But this is a man who stood with us and stands with us. He is a genuine Democrat.

  • If you’re for impeachment, send some help.
  • If you’re a vet, send some help.
  • If you’re a physician, send some help.
  • If anyone you know suffered from lung cancer, send some help.
  • If you want to see universal health care coverage, send some help.
  • If you’re appalled by the corruption of Congress, send some help.
  • If you want to send a message to the courts that it’s wrong to bankrupt elected officials who do their jobs, send some help.

But send some help.

Federal Inmate No. 28301-016

A federal appeals court ruled unanimously that Lewis “Scooter” Libby cannot delay his prison term.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons has not yet assigned Libby a prison or given him a date to surrender. But last week it designated him as federal inmate No. 28301-016.

I hope this means the appeals court didn’t see any reason to believe Libby will win an appeal of his conviction.

Dear BBC…

Posted by Charles II on July 2, 2007

Dishonest press coverage of Mexico spreads abroad. </a>. Count the lies:

Tens of thousands of people with flags and banners gathered in the Zocalo….

Mr Lopez Obrador has never accepted his defeat by Felipe Calderon….

…attendance at the demonstration was much smaller than those staged a year ago…

…Mr Calderon’s crackdown on the drugs trade has won him popularity and a recent poll showed his approval rating at 65%.

You can, for the moment watch aerial photos of the demonstration at El Universal. The demo may not be as large as last summer’s, where the sidestreets were packed for many blocks. But it is huge– not “tens of thousands,” as the BBC claims, but more likely 250,000 – 500,000. Here’s my comment to the Beeb: Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s Where The Would-Be Glasgow Bombers Screwed Up

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 2, 2007

Just Us

They picked the wrong targets.

If the dingbats in Glasgow had only gone after a Planned Parenthood clinic in the US, they’d likely be out on bail right now and would wind up getting less of a sentence than many drunk drivers.

I’m not kidding:

DAVENPORT — A Detroit man was sentenced to five years in prison Friday for trying to burn down a women’s health clinic that he mistakenly thought performed abortions.

David McMenemy, 46, pleaded guilty in January to arson against a business affecting interstate commerce. He could have been sentenced up to 20 years in prison.

Police said McMenemy drove to Davenport and crashed his car into the Edgerton Women’s Health Care Center lobby at 4:30 a.m. on Sept. 11. He then lit a Gatorade bottle filled with gasoline on fire, walked away from his car and surrendered to firefighters.

Get this: The FBI refused to investigate, even though the attack was carried out on the fifth anniversary of 9/11.

Let’s Slander Rachel Carson!

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 2, 2007

Hey, why not — she’s been dead for nearly half a century; she can’t fight back. The weapon: Misrepresenting what she wrote, of course — and lying like hell about DDT.

Salon‘s Kirsten Weir has the scoop. And why doesn’t it surprise me that one of the prime movers behind this is Richard Mellon Scaife and his Pittsburgh Tribune-Review?
