Bush losing Pakistan to Taliban

Posted by Charles II on July 3, 2007

While Dubya is claiming great victories all the way from the Euphrates to Jallalabad, the reality is that the entire arc from Jordan to Pakistan is falling under the sway of very dangerous people. There is a rebellion in Pakistan, and it’s not clear that the military dictatorship can contain it.

The Pakistani army was preparing to storm a pro-Taliban mosque in central Islamabad early this morning, after a day of vicious street battles had left at least 12 people dead and 150 wounded.

A column of troops and armoured vehicles moved towards Lal Masjid, or the Red Mosque….

The dramatic siege was the culmination of months of simmering tension between authorities and the radical students….

…There were reports of clashes between other radicals and police in the Swat Valley, 120 miles to the north. …

The Red Mosque is at the heart of fears that “Talibanisation” is spreading in Pakistan. Its students have tried to violently impose their strict social code on the capital by abducting prostitutes, threatening CD shop owners and defying police….

Imagine D. James Kennedy, Hal Lindsay, Benny Hinn, and John Hagee running the land mass running from Libya to Pakistan, controlling much of the world’s oil and a few dozen nuclear weapons.

Zhenli Ye Gon, a Mexican of Chinese origin presently in New York, is accusing Secretary of Labor Javier Lozano Alarcón (i.e., PAN ) of having him hide 200 million dollars. Javier Lozano ran the war room of Calderon’s campaign. Others asked Ye Gon to keep some anti-aircraft missiles. The Mexican government is accusing Ye Gon of being a meth manufacturer, saying he imported pseudoephedrine through a pharmaceutical company he founded. Ye Gon is said to have made his fortune re-selling  clothing confiscated by customs, as well as textiles, clothes, and footwear.

FeCal’s war against drugs is working great, with assassinations up 10.7%.

47 people in northern Veracruz (in Tzocohuite and Lomas del Dorado) who were protesting expropriation of the land they had been granted were kidnapped. Ten ended up in jail and about 37 simply disappeared. Cars were destroyed and many other people fled A human rights observer was present to witness this. A “cacique” (strongman) family is alleged to be behind this.

In Which I Agree (for the most part) With The Cato Institute

George Antoinette

(Portrait of Georgine “L’droit, c’est moi!” Antoinette from the Tuileriles, ca. 1789.)

I’m scared.

Here’s a portion of a piece from the Cato Institute with which I largely agree: Commute THESE Sentences, Mr. President

Mandy Martinson — 15 years for helping her boyfriend count his drug-dealing money.

DeJarion Echols — 20 years for selling a small amount of crack and owning a gun, causing Reagan-appointed federal judge Walter S. Smith, Jr. to say, “This is one of those situations where I’d like to see a congressman sitting before me.”

Weldon Angelos — 55 years for minor marijuana and gun charges, causing the George W. Bush-appointed judge Paul Cassell, previously best known for pressing the courts to overturn the Miranda decision, to call the mandatory sentence in this case “unjust, cruel, and even irrational.”

Anthea Harris — 15 years when members of her husband’s drug ring received sentence reductions to testify against her, although she had not been directly involved in the business.

A New (?) Scooter Lie

Posted by MEC on July 3, 2007

On Hardball this evening, the obnoxious Kate O’Beirne dismissed the CIA request for a criminal referral in the outing of Valerie Plame by asserting it was just “payback” for disputes between the CIA and the White House.

These people truly have no shame.

Congress To Bush: No Fast-Track For You!

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 3, 2007

Hey, at least one really good thing happened this week:

US President George W. Bush lost his special trade power at midnight Saturday as opposition Democrats flexed their new grip on Congress and refused White House appeals to renew it.

Democrats, who wrested control of Congress from Republicans in January, were eager to reclaim the constitutional trade authority and set their own stamp on trade policy.

With the expiration of the nearly five-year-old Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), known as “fast-track,” the United States sets a new, Democrat-steered course on trade at a time when the Doha Round of global trade talks is near collapse.

Hours before Bush’s fast track authority expired at midnight, US and South Korean negotiators on Saturday inked a trade deal — the biggest since the 1993 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). But congressional support for the agreement looked slim.

The end of TPA also highlighted a waning appetite for free trade among Americans in the face of a burgeoning trade deficit. Critics blame a swelling multi-billion-dollar trade gap with China and others for the loss of thousands of US manufacturing jobs.

Democratic lawmakers hammered home Friday their newfound clout.

“Our legislative priorities do not include the renewal of fast-track authority,” House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other leading Democrats said in a statement.

The House Democrats said they had a plan to improve US trade policy, while at the same time addressing increased economic insecurity felt by US families.

Among the steps to be taken is the introduction soon of legislation to address the growing US trade imbalance with China and strengthen overall enforcement of US trade agreements and US trade laws.

Mitch Berg, Agent Proshlockateur

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 3, 2007

Long ago, Molly Ivins pointed out that the Republicans were habitual practicers and cultivators of the psychological tic known as “projection”, wherein one blames other people for one’s own thoughts and deeds.

Today I’d like to introduce you to Mitch Berg, local Republican radio host and owner of the “Shot In The Dark” blog. Mitchie-poo wants to have it both ways: He wants to stamp his widdle feet and blame lefty protesters for any and all acts of violence at the upcoming Republican National Convention, while at the same time happily discussing the 2008 convention plans of himself and his buddies at “Protest Warrior“, whose members like to go around doing stupid things while pretending to be lefty protesters.
