The unspoken secret of Burma’s sorrow

Posted by Charles II on July 25, 2007

It’s grim and ironic reading. The author asks why we don’t do something. The answer, of course, is O-I-L. But the word can’t be spoken aloud by a Minister of Parliament.

John Bercow, MP, London Independent

“Burma suffers a political, human rights and humanitarian situation as grim as any in the world today. The country is run by an utterly illegitimate government that spends 50 per cent of its budget on the military and less than a $1 (50p) per head on the health and education of its own citizens. “

Corruption charges may take down Alaska delegation

Posted by Charles II on July 25, 2007

John R. Wilke, WSJ (via t/o) in a style of journalism soon to be made extinct by acquisition:

Rep. Don Young of Alaska, the former chairman of the House Transportation Committee, now is the subject of a continuing criminal inquiry involving possible political favors for a company in Alaska, people close to the case said. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, the powerful former chairman of the Appropriations Committee and the longest-serving Senate Republican, is also now under criminal investigation, these people said.

Federal investigators are examining whether Rep. Young or Sen. Stevens accepted bribes, illegal gratuities or unreported gifts from VECO Corp., Alaska’s largest oil-field engineering firm, people close to the case said.

Bushco terrorizes tourists, costs economy almost $100B

Posted by Charles II on July 25, 2007

CNN via Nonny Mouse sub Logan Murphy at Crooks and Liars via Avedon:

Travel industry leaders meeting in Washington Wednesday said they want the U.S. government to stop treating tourists like terrorists, and to take steps to reverse a steep decline in overseas travel to the United States that followed the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Overseas travel to the United States has plummeted 17 percent in the past five years, travel industry officials say. And while a recent surge in travelers from Mexico and Canada has helped the industry rebound, it masks a precipitous and painful drop in travel originating in other countries.

The U.S. share of international travel has dropped from 9 percent to 6 percent, the group says.

The travel industry blames the U.S. government for under-staffing border posts, which they say is contributing to widespread perceptions overseas that the United States is hostile to foreigners.

“International travelers will tell you that they find that they are treated like criminals, that they are barked at by U.S. officials,” said Geoffrey Freeman of the Discover America Partnership. “They simply feel unwelcome and that is leading them to choose other countries.”

Says Nonny Mouse:

We are not becoming a police state.

We are one.

House Says NO To Permanent Bases

The First Federal Congress

That was voted on today.

The legislation looks airtight to me.  No loopholes that I can see.

Now let’s see it get past the Senate.  Bush will veto it, but let’s make him do so.
