A falling out of rodents as US, Saudis quarrel

Posted by Charles II on July 27, 2007

Ewen MacAskill in The Guardian:

The extent of the deterioration in US-Saudi relations was exposed for the first time yesterday when Washington accused Riyadh of working to undermine the Iraqi government. …

Reflecting the deteriorating relationship, the US made public claims that the Saudis have been distributing fake documents lying about Mr Maliki….

Zalmay Khalilzad, until recently the US ambassador to Baghdad, protested to the Saudis over fake documents distributed in Baghdad which claimed Mr Maliki was an Iranian agent and had tipped off the radical Shia cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, about a US crackdown on his Madhi army militia. …

The Bush administration is also expressing its unhappiness with the Saudis for failing to stem the flow of Saudi jihadists across its border to fight in Iraq, often as suicide bombers. The US estimates that about 40% of the 60 to 80 foreign fighters entering Iraq each month are from Saudi Arabia.

The administration, like Britain, is still dependent on oil from Saudi and until now has been reluctant to go public about the increasing differences with the kingdom.

Michael Moore subpoenaed

Posted by Charles II on July 27, 2007

Ok, so you all knew that because you watch Leno. But nothing is up on the [Michael Moore] website or on USDOJ.

What crime would they possibly be able to prosecute him for, for which any jury would convict?  Be creative.

What Most Of The News Articles On This Story Tend Not To Emphasize…

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 27, 2007

…is that two of the four innocent men died in prison long before their convictions were overturned.  (Thanks to the Guardian for putting that fact front and center.)  Instead, the focus is on the large monetary damages awarded to the two survivors and the families of the dead men, with more than a little whiff of “Look at these greedy guys!  Hey, they were mobbed-up Eyetalians anyway, they deserved what they got.”
