Corruption Probe Aims at Another Bushevik

Posted by MEC on August 31, 2007

Earlier this week, the New York Times reported that

Several federal agencies are investigating a widening network of criminal cases involving the purchase and delivery of billions of dollars of weapons, supplies and other materiel to Iraqi and American forces, according to American officials. The officials said it amounted to the largest ring of fraud and kickbacks uncovered in the conflict here, the officials said.

The inquiry has already led to several indictments of Americans, with more expected, the officials said. One of the investigations involves a senior American officer who worked closely with Gen. David H. Petraeus in setting up the logistics operation to supply the Iraqi forces when General Petraeus was in charge of training and equipping those forces in 2004 and 2005, American officials said Monday.

The “senior American officer” is Lt. Col. Levonda Joey Selph. And lo and behold, we find a Levonda J. Selph in the [Google cache] Vets4Bush “roll call”.

What a coincidence.

Osama as system administrator: A primer on FBI wiretapping

Posted by Charles II on August 31, 2007

Ryan Singel, Wired Mag:

The FBI has quietly built a sophisticated, point-and-click surveillance system that performs instant wiretaps on almost any communications device, according to nearly a thousand pages of restricted documents newly released under the Freedom of Information Act.

But The Surge Is Working!

Posted by Phoenix Woman on August 31, 2007

It’s working so well that the insurgents damned near took out a plane carrying three US Senators and a Congressman:

Senator Mel Martinez says “It was a scary moment” but the “pilots were terrific.” He says he’d just taken off his body armor, but quickly put it back on again.

Senators Richard Shelby and James Inhofe were also on the flight as well as Congressman Bud Cramer.

But of course this won’t stop BushCo’s determination to show that the “surge” (read: escalation) is working.  In fact, in some cases, it almost sounds as if the Bush Junta is attempting to incite our own troops into fragging a few Congresscritters, just for grins.

UK military experts (updated): US attack on Iran is beginning

Posted by Charles II on August 30, 2007

The study was made available by Larisa Alexandrovna of Raw Story (via Avedon and Chris Floyd). The authors are Dan Plesch and Martin Butcher of the University of London. They state that:

Some form of low level US and possibly UK military action as well as armed popular resistance appear underway inside the Iranian provinces or ethnic areas of the Azeri, Balujistan, Kurdistan and Khuzestan.

That means we are already at war. But Bushco is keeping it under wraps until they are ready for the air strike. They say:

• Any attack is likely to be on a massive multi-front scale but avoiding a ground invasion. Attacks focused on WMD facilities would leave Iran too many retaliatory options, leave President Bush open to the charge of using too little force and leave the regime intact.

• US bombers and long range missiles are ready today to destroy 10,000 targets in Iran in a few hours.

• US ground, air and marine forces already in the Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan can devastate Iranian forces, the regime and the state at short notice.

As inevitable as this madness seems, they haven’t dropped the bombs yet. You can still protest, call, etc.

Update (8/30): The article by Larisa and Muriel Kane is here.

Barnett Rubin has stated that his sources say that the campaign for war, not war, begins in mid-September.

Colonel Patrick Lang says that Plesch and Martin are way too optimistic about what air power can accomplish. As I commented, the sheer stupidity of the apparent Bushco plan for the destruction of Iran makes it plausible.

Larry The Peeper Versus Diaper Dave

Posted by Phoenix Woman on August 30, 2007

Joan Walsh and Glenn Greenwald point up the extreme hypocrisy in the GOP’s rallying around (the heterosexual horndog Senator and fan of illicit sex) David Vitter even as they now condemn (the homo/bisexual horndog Senator and fan of illicit sex) Larry Craig.

As Greenwald states, it’s not just Vitter’s heteroness that protects him:  It’s that if he resigned now, it would be a Democratic governor picking his replacement, whereas Idaho’s current governor is a Republican.

The Last Pretty Thing

Posted by Phoenix Woman on August 30, 2007

One of the few growth industries in New Orleans has been Disaster Tours:

“This is the last pretty thing you’re going to see until we get to the lakefront,” tour guide Rose Scott tells passengers gazing at the live oaks of City Park.

They’re a bit more than an hour into a van tour of the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. Scott’s employer, Isabelle Cossart of Tours by Isabelle, calls it 70 miles of destruction in 3½ hours.

Nearly two years after Katrina turned the New Orleans area into a lake of misery, demand for tours of the devastation overwhelms that for visits to mainstay attractions such as cemeteries, plantations and swamps.

“Our survival depends on it. If I quit doing the post-Katrina city tour, I’m out of business,” Cossart said.

Scott’s van passes the convention center and Superdome, where thousands of refugees suffered after Katrina.

“The convention center was never supposed to be a shelter. That’s why they didn’t have food there,” she says.

She turns the van toward areas little known to outsiders before Katrina: Gentilly and Lakeview, where the view of Lake Pontchartrain provides respite on the way to the Lower 9th Ward. Scott drives on to St. Bernard, the hard-hit parish just east of New Orleans where she lived until the storm.

“It used to be, we did nothing but plantation tours,” Cossart said. The $58-per-person Katrina tour now makes up three-quarters of her business, and she recently bought a third van.

Unfortunately, another growth industry has been kicking impoverished black people out of homes that were untouched by Katrina — and thus extremely desirable to the upscale white clientele to whom these homes will eventually be sold. Common Ground, a group made up of the people who are being kept at gunpoint from returning to these homes, needs your help in fighting back against this all-too-American version of ethnic cleansing.

Report (updated): Preparations for attack on Iran in process

Posted by Charles II on August 29, 2007

Larisa Alexandrovna of Raw Story reported on Thom Hartmann that preparations for an attack on Iran are in process and the attack will begin within about two weeks. She sourced British analysts.

She’s a good reporter and worth listening to. If I can find something more substantive, I’ll post it.

BTW, Thom Hartmann is supposed to be on C-Span on Friday.
