A 59 minute primer on Blackwater

Posted by Charles II on September 27, 2007

Jeremy Scahill did a talk at Oakland on Flashpoints. I thought I was up on Blackwater, but I learned a number of things from the talk. For example,

  • Ken Starr works for them, and before him, Fred Fielding,
  • Joseph Schmitz, he of the Pentagon IG’s office is with them. He’s a member of The Order of Malta, which dates back to the Crusades,
  • They’re in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  • Washington Group International is in Baku, surveilling Iran and Chechnya,
  • Erik Prince is a Green Party donor, as well as a Republican donor.

Chaos IS the Plan, DoJ edition

Posted by Charles II on September 27, 2007

Did you ever wonder whether the goal of placing Alberto Gonzales in charge of the Department of Justice and hassling Republican US Attorneys was not to obtain any specific end, but to simply create chaos in the Department? “Why would anyone do that?” you ask.

Maybe to ensure that all of the contractor fraud wouldn’t get prosecuted?  The Crux looks at the sum of contractor fraud in light of a t/o article by Matt Renner.

Senator Blow-Dry Does It Again

Posted by Phoenix Woman on September 27, 2007

Norm “Pay No Attention To The Blonde Behind The Curtain” Coleman joins Rudy Giuliani in the “Do As I Say, Not As I Do” annals of Republican hypocrisy (from TPM via The Sideshow):

D’oh!: Leave it to Sen. Norm Coleman to step on his own dingbat story. Turns out Coleman also got a cut-rate price on his anti-Moveon newspaper ad.

The StarTribune was at least decent enough to refund Al Franken — who paid the national rate rather than the local rate Coleman got — the difference between what he paid and what Coleman paid.

Larry Craig: I’m Staying In The Senate

Posted by Phoenix Woman on September 27, 2007

Now this is like Christmas come two months early:

Remember a few weeks back when Larry Craig’s office said he would resign his Senate seat by September 30 if his guilty plea weren’t overturned by then?

Well, forget all that — Craig is staying.

In the wake of the news today that the judge on the case won’t be ruling on whether his guilty plea can be withdrawn until late next week at the latest — that is to say, well after September 30 — Craig has just confirmed that he’s staying put:

“Today was a major step in the legal effort to clear my name,” Craig said in a statement. “The court has not issued a ruling on my motion to withdraw my guilty plea. For now, I will continue my work in the U.S. Senate for Idaho.”

I can’t imagine he’ll be there until November of next year. But the longer he stays, the less time the Idaho Republicans have to pick a replacement for the Republican governor to appoint — and the less time that replacement will have to put some daylight between him/herself and the stench of the Craig scandal.
