Cindy Sheehan runs against Pelosi

Posted by Charles II on December 14, 2007

Via Avedon Carol and Unqualified Offerings, we learn that Cindy Sheehan has announced to run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

I’m sure that money would not be turned away.

The people’s impeachment. It’s called elections.

As I understand it, Cindy Sheehan is going to run as an Independent. It seems to me she would have a better chance of winning the Democratic primary than the general election.

Then again, if the Republicans (and Greens) want to see Pelosi defeated they should forgo running a candidate in the general election and get behind Sheehan.

According to the Wikepedia Pelosi page, in ’04 Pelosi won 83% of her district’s votes while the Republican received 12% and the Green 4%. In ’06 Pelosi won 80% of her district’s votes while the Republican received 11% and the Green 8%.

If Progressives/liberals/lefties are to take control of the Democratic Party they are going to have to make serious overt efforts to defeat Pelosi in ’08 and Reid in ’10. (Off topic, why have Democratic senators chosen to make vulnerable members of their caucus their majority leader twice in a row – first Daschle and now Reid?)

Progressives/liberals/lefties must support whomever, from any party, has the best chance of defeating Pelosi and Reid. As it stands now, large numbers of the members of the Democratic caucus in each congressional house think they can enhance their reelection prospects by working against progressive/liberal/lefty legislation. The only way to persuade these Democrats to fall in line and support Progressive/liberal/lefty legislation is to make it clear that if they fail to do so they will be targeted by the base of the party in both their primaries and the general election.

Progressives/liberals/lefties have to find the courage and resolve to send a message to elected Democrats. Tom DeLay, not Denny Hasert, ran the House after Newt Gingrich was run out of the Speakership by the Republicans. Steny Hoyer and Rahm Emanuel are running the House now, not Nancy Pelosi. By cutting the likes of Pelosi and Reid loose the Democratic base can let it be known that it is not looking for more Democrats In Name Only to be elected but rather that the base is committed to electing Democrats loyal to the Progressive/liberal/lefty agenda.
