Details of Siegelman persecution emerge

Posted by Charles II on December 18, 2007

Scott Horton of Harper’s and Larisa’s team at Raw Story are piecing together how and why Alabama Governor Don Siegelman became the highest ranking political prisoner held by the Bush regime. Here’s a graphic from Larisa’s story to lay out the general outlines of the conspiracy:

Scott Horton's layout of the conspiracy to jail Don Siegelman

[Bill] Canary's wife, Leura Canary, federalized [Alabama Attorney General William] Pryor's investigation [of Siegelman] in 2001, after President George W. Bush appointed her as US Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama. Closely tied to Pryor, whose campaign was advised by her husband, Canary also appointed the wife of the Attorney General's lawyer and close advisor, Christopher Weller, as her first assistant.

As Canary's investigation proceeded, Siegelman's potential Republican challengers began to hammer him hard on ethics issues, drawing heavily on leaks from the Pryor and Canary investigations to do so. ...

In the 2002 race for Alabama governor, Bill Canary advised the campaign of Siegelman's Republican opponent, Rep. Bob Riley. Pryor ensured Riley's victory in that extremely close race when he declared that unsealing the ballots for a recount would be a crime....

Karl Rove is known to have worked with Bill Canary on numerous political races in Alabama, beginning in 1994 and including William Pryor's campaign in 1998. Canary and Pryor both enjoyed a close political and social relationship with Rove — who went on to become a senior adviser to the president, before Bush's "brain" resigned earlier this year.

Two Republican lawyers who have asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation allege that Canary and Rove also worked together on the 2002 Alabama governor's race.

And then there’s the role of Jack Abramoff in all this….

The three largest newspapers plus the Internet site in Alabama are owned by Advance Publications Inc. Newhouse Newspapers is the newspaper publishing division. Advance Publications is owned by billionaires Samuel Irving Newhouse Jr. and his brother Donald Newhouse.

These three newspapers instruct their writers to start every article that they write about Siegelman with this statement, “Our newspapers endorsed Riley and we believe Siegelman to be a crook.” Then instead of being impartial they twist every sentence to sound negative.

It has taken a few months, but most Alabamians now know that these newspapers were a major part of the conspiracy to remove a popular Democrat in Alabama by distorting the truth about ex governor Don Siegelman, by not accurately reporting how his elections were taken from him, by not reporting how millions of dollars of Choctaw Indian Casino money flowed into Alabama to get Riley Elected and to kill Siegelman’s education Lottery.

[grouch] Why are southern Democrats going along with Republicans by using “Democrat” as an adjective? [/grouch]
