The Company They Keep

Posted by MEC on July 21, 2008

John McCain is working overtime to convince the good people of Michigan that his policies will help them out of the economic hole that George W. Bush dug and shoved them into.

But what’s that saying? Something about knowing people by the company they keep?

John McCain new “Great Lakes Regional Headquarters” is located in a building for which the majority owner is “one of the state’s leading attorneys representing banks and mortgage holders in the matter of throwing people out of their homes.”

The good people of Michigan, which has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country, should carefully consider the implications. And I would like to know how much rent McSame is paying.

So Much For That BushMcCainCo Lie

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 21, 2008

When Der Spiegel quoted Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki as saying that he agreed with Obama’s timeline on 16 months for removing troops from Iraq, McCain and Bush’s people have largely succeeded in keeping the story from reaching the evening TV news, where most Americans would have been most likely to see it, by pushing the story that al-Maliki’s words were somehow mistranslated.

Except, of course, that they weren’t. As the New York Times states (h/t Attackerman):

The following is a direct translation from the Arabic of Mr. Maliki’s comments by The Times: “Obama’s remarks that — if he takes office — in 16 months he would withdraw the forces, we think that this period could increase or decrease a little, but that it could be suitable to end the presence of the forces in Iraq.”

He continued: “Who wants to exit in a quicker way has a better assessment of the situation in Iraq.”

Of course, now that the Bad Translation lie is no longer operative, the demonization of al-Maliki is proceeding apace at various right-wing outfits that serve as the tastemakers for the GOP/Media Complex:

We should tell Maliki, loudly and in public, that he owes his job to us, and that further prosecution of our military operations in his country will be conducted with regard only to U.S. interests, as determined in consensus by our established domestic political processes. And if he doesn’t like that, he can go to hell.

Expect to see versions of these rants, in slightly altered form, on a TV network within the next week.

Why Bush Sent an Observer to Talks with Iran

Posted by MEC on July 21, 2008

It wasn’t because somebody in the Bush regime recognized that diplomacy is better than war.

It was so the Busheviks could accuse Iran of bad faith and thus increase the saber-rattling.

Having a U.S. diplomat at the meetings gives Condi Rice and other Bush minions the pretext for claiming they know exactly what went on and their version of events and of Iran’s intentions is the truth.

And now Condi is signalling that the U.S. has given up on diplomacy.

Rice was dismissive when asked if Burns or another U.S. diplomat would be present to hear Iran’s response in two weeks.

“I think we’ve done enough to demonstrate that the United States is serious and to assure our partners that we’re serious,” she said.

Or rather, that the “diplomacy” was an empty gesture to justify the warmongering.

Shoulda seen this one coming.
