What a Coincidence

Posted by MEC on July 28, 2008

There can’t possibly be any connection between these developments, can there?

(1) The average tax rate for the wealthiest 1% of Americans fell to its lowest level in at least 18 years.

(2) The U.S. budget deficit will rise in fiscal year 2009 to a record of nearly half a trillion dollars.

Even The Perle Post Inches Closer To Admitting It

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 28, 2008

Yessir: The Jerusalem Post, PNAC Central, Richard Perle’s plaything, actually comes close to admitting that Barack Obama is far more qualified to be president than either Bush or McCain (h/t Steve Benen at C&L):

Two months ago in the Oval Office, President George W. Bush, coming to the end of a two-term presidency and presumably as expert on Israeli-Palestinian policy as he is ever going to be, was accompanied by a team of no fewer than five advisers and spokespeople during a 40-minute interview with this writer and three other Israeli journalists.

In March, on his whirlwind visit to Israel, Republican presidential nominee John McCain, one of whose primary strengths is said to be his intimate grasp of foreign affairs, chose to bring along Sen. Joe Lieberman to the interview our diplomatic correspondent Herb Keinon and I conducted with him, looked to Lieberman several times for reassurance on his answers and seemed a little flummoxed by a question relating to the nuances of settlement construction.

On Wednesday evening, toward the end of his packed one-day visit here, Barack Obama, the Democratic senator who is leading the race for the White House and who lacks long years of foreign policy involvement, spoke to The Jerusalem Post with only a single aide in his King David Hotel room, and that aide’s sole contribution to the conversation was to suggest that the candidate and I switch seats so that our photographer would get better lighting for his pictures.

The JP article went on to state that Obama “knew precisely what he wanted to say about the most intricate issues confronting and concerning Israel, and expressed himself clearly, even stridently on key subjects.”

And In News That Surprises Absolutely No One

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 28, 2008

Well, well, well: The PUMAs seem to be pretty toothless despite all the lovely free publicity they’re getting from the GOP/Media Complex:

Thousands of Hillary Clinton’s donors gave at least $1.2 million to Democrat Barack Obama in June, accelerating a migration from her presidential campaign that began months ago.

Republican John McCain collected about $11,000 from that group in the same period, according to an Arizona Republic analysis of Federal Election Commission records.

The numbers suggest no widespread defections from the Democratic Party after its hard-fought primary season between Clinton and Obama ended the first week of June. McCain has hoped that many of Clinton’s supporters would join him in an anti-Obama backlash.

The financial reports are even more lopsided than polls that indicate few Clinton backers are crossing party lines.

[…]

Overall, Clinton donors who also have given to Obama have provided the presumptive Democratic nominee with $3.6 million since January. McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, has collected $117,000 from Clinton donors in that time.

$11,000 in a month? Cripes, that’s pitiful. Obama can raise that during a coffee break. Of course, many of these folks are probably actual McCain supporters who maxed out early on and are only pretending to be Hillary supporters; their familiarity with standard right-wing tropes is a big hint as to their actual allegiance.

“Senator Hong” Goes Down

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 28, 2008

Just got the news the other day that Peter Hong, aka the brain for and chief babysitter of former Senator Rod Grams, was busted in a prostitution sting:

Peter Hong, a longtime Republican operative in Minnesota, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a charge of soliciting prostitution in St. Paul.

[…]

Hong has been in and out of the Republican side of Minnesota politics since the mid-1990s, when he surfaced as a genial bulldog campaign press secretary for former Sen. Rod Grams, R-Minn. He served as a spokesman for Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s campaign in 2002 and for the Bush-Cheney campaign in Minnesota in 2004.

Most recently, Hong was a point person for presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. Gina Countryman, a spokeswoman for the Minnesota Republican Party, said Hong is not currently working for any Minnesota candidate.

This reminds me that Rod “Family Values” Grams, Hong’s old boss, was having an affair with another staffer, Christine “Dirty Tricks” Gunhus, which started round about (if not before) the time of his divorce from his first wife, Lolly.
