Media Plays, Media Ploys

File this under “Be Careful What You Wish For”.

John Sidney McCain III’s effort to smother the news coverage given to Barack Obama’s barnburner of a speech (when even racist Republican Pat Buchanan is so mesmerized by a speech by a Democratic black man that he starts reciting it on the air, you know it’s good), is, now that the initial shock is wearing off, not playing that well.

The media is already starting to pick Palin apart. The words “Quayle” and “disastrous” are being bandied about. Worse, the way McCain did it has generated hard feelings among the people he used:

Though it was high in shock value, the Palin pick left bruised feelings among the short-list contenders who were not picked — and infuriated some Republican officials who privately said McCain had gone out on a limb, unnecessarily, without laying the groundwork for such an unknown. Two senior Republican officials close to Mitt Romney and Tim
Pawlenty said they had both been rudely strung along and now “feel manipulated.”

“They now know that they were used as decoys, well after McCain had decided not to pick them,” one Republican involved in the process said.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama’s landmark speech last night was seen by 38 million viewers — more than watched the Oscars, the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics, or the final American Idol — and early indications are that it moved a number of fence-sitting people squarely into Obama’s camp.

Here’s a good one: Palin, McCain told the crowd, “was a union member and is married to a union member and understands the problems, the hopes, the values of working people.”

I wonder whether Sarah Palin ever suffered financial hardships from having a child with special needs, had to go round in circles with an insurance company to get the medical care the child needed, or had to choose between keeping her job and caring for her child. The responsibilities of a political career wouldn’t leave her a lot of time for family responsibilities. Who sees to her growing family’s needs?

She has a child with Downs, but the child was born only a few months ago.
