Next chapter of smear-a-thon arrives

Posted by Charles II on October 31, 2008

Eileen Sullivan and Elliot Spagot, AP (on AOL; no external link):

Barack Obama’s aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as “Aunti Zeituni” in Obama’s memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango’s case.

Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcment official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.

My immediate thoughts:
1. No Bush political officer involved? Bwahaha!
2. Great oversight of public housing by the Bush Administration.
3. Ditto for INS.
4. How many more 30 second ads can I endure?

My immediate thought was, “Rush Limbaugh will be going on and on and on about how this proves Barack Obama is responsible for letting all the illegal immigrants into the country.”

The earlier report I read about Obama’s aunt said that apparently he hadn’t even been aware that she was here. Expect that little detail to be completely overlooked by the Usual Suspects.

I feel sorry for the woman. She’d have been left alone if the mediawhores didn’t think that the election wasn’t interesting enough without dragging all these irrelevant details into it.

    It gets worse, MEC.

“US election rules require that individuals making presidential campaign contributions be US citizens”

This is false. Election rules require that contributors be US citizens or “a lawfully admitted permanent resident” (to quote the wording on Obama’s donation page, which I assume would get it right). Granted, Obama’s aunt isn’t a lawful permanent resident, so her contribution still doesn’t comply with the rules. But please. It’s not like Obama solicited the donation from her.

Kula2316 in DailyKos observes, “The wingnuts are going crazy over the AP story about Obama’s aunt living illegally in the United States. These are the same people who were outraged (outraged!) at any mention of Sarah Palin’s family.” If it weren’t for hypocrisy, the Republicans wouldn’t have any values at all.

    It’s a distraction, MEC.

I think this whole episode says much more about Bush’s incompetent Department of Homeland Security and his willingness to use government resources for political gain than anything else.

But the wingnuts will throw anything against the wall to see what sticks.
