Brake dancing

Posted by Charles II on November 10, 2008

Brian Burnsed, BW:

Next year, the United Parcel Service (UPS) will deploy on U.S. streets a new model of its signature boxy brown truck. At first glance, it’ll look no different than any of the company’s 93,000 other delivery trucks. Inside the hulking chassis, however, will sit a hybrid technology that uses a hydraulic system in concert with a diesel engine to power the vehicle. The Environmental Protection Agency has received numerous patents on the system since 2000.

Similar to electric hybrids, hydraulic hybrids draw energy from braking, but are twice as efficient collecting that energy because the braking energy is not wasted by being passed into an electric motor. Instead, this energy is used to power a pump, which transports hydraulic fluid from a low-pressure reservoir to a high-pressure accumulator. As more fluid passes into the accumulator, the pressure grows, eventually being released as energy that is used to directly power the rear wheels. The hydraulic system replaces the driveshaft and traditional transmission

Won’t Get Fooled Again

Remember the reports that Iraq had tried to buy yellowcake from Niger, which Bush used to “prove” that we had to invade Iraq to stop Saddam Hussein from building nuclear weapons?

…The reports based on a forged document?

It’s starting to look like Bush is trying that trick again.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has obtained evidence suggesting that documents which have been described as technical studies for a secret Iranian nuclear weapons-related research program may have been fabricated.

These technical papers, along with some correspondence related to the alleged secret Iranian program — referred to by the IAEA as “alleged studies” — have been the primary basis during 2008 for the insistence by the US-led international coalition pushing for sanctions against Iran that the Iranian case must be kept going in the United Nations Security Council.

Suspicion has surrounded the “alleged studies” documents from the beginning, because the United States has refused to say who brought the collection to US intelligence four years ago.

Dean Was Right

Posted by MEC on November 10, 2008

A columnist in the Scaife-owned Pittsburgh Tribune-Review acknowledges what many Democrats won’t say:

Howard Dean’s 50-State Strategy was a factor in the major Democratic gains in this election. Dean laid the groundwork both for President-Elect Obama’s 50-state campaign and his use of the Internet to raise funds and inspire campaign volunteers.

As Mahatma Gandhi said, “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”

Monday Morning News Roundup

Posted by Phoenix Woman on November 10, 2008

The charmingly rabid dorkwads at Human Events are foursquare behind Sarah Palin in 2012. Assuming, that is, that she’s not in the Federal pen by then. (Though that might not matter to these folks.)

— Dear conservatives: Stop lying about Roosevelt’s record.

Joe Scarborough, complaining about Rahm Emanuel’s potty mouth, lets an F-Bomb fly on morning TV. (Funnily enough, I don’t recall him freaking out about Dick Cheney’s telling Pat Leahy, on the Senate floor, to “go f**k yourself”.)

— Saving the best news for last:

1) Obama told us months ago that he’d have his people review and prepare to undo Bush’s vilest Executive Orders. He’s keeping his promise.

2) Obama told us months ago that he plans to shut down Guantanamo’s prisons and give its inmates fair trials on US soil, in US courtrooms. He’s keeping his promise.

3) The Pentagon’s own Defense Business Board says that the Pentagon needs to go on a cash diet: “A senior Pentagon advisory group, in a series of bluntly worded briefings, is warning President-elect Barack Obama that the Defense Department’s current budget is ‘not sustainable,’ and he must scale back or eliminate some of the military’s most prized weapons programs.”
