Conservation is the best renewable fuel

Posted by Charles II on December 10, 2008

Avedon Carol linked a great piece over at Think Progress which shows excerpts of a talk by Stephen Chu of Lawrence Berkeley. A Nobel Laureate, he is considered a dark horse candidate for the Secretary of Energy by Think Progress– but the Financial Times says he is likely to be the next Secretary.

Definitely.worth.watching.

Also in the article by Edward Luce in the FT, Carol Browner for energy coordinator, Lisa Jackson (chief of staff for Jon Corzine) as head of the EPA, and Nancy Sutley (deputy mayor of LA) in CEQ. Also, Obama is expected to push through cap-and-trade, a so-far largely mythical system to reduce carbon emissions.

The white hoods behind Bill O’Reilly

Posted by Charles II on December 10, 2008

Max Blumenthal, Alternet (via SC)

[Former Fortune magazine editor Peter] Brimelow founded what would become the internet’s leading anti-immigration web journal, VDare.com, named for the first British child born in the Americas. Brimelow’s new venture provided a forum to allies like Jared Taylor, a white supremacist publisher, and Kevin MacDonald, an evolutionary psychology professor who has argued that Jews are genetically equipped to out-compete Gentiles for resources and power. In 2003, four years after VDare’s founding, the Southern Poverty Law Center classified the journal as a “hate group.”

VDare became the staging ground for the War on the War on Christmas. Unlike their more respectable counterparts, Brimelow’s writers dared to name the true anti-Christian Grinch: Jews….

VDare’s 2005 War on Christmas winner, Steve Sailer, a Eugenics enthusiast and author of the new biography of Barack Obama, America’s Half-Blood Prince, picked up where Piatak left off. “American Jews,” Sailer wrote, “those exemplars of successful assimilation now seem to be de-assimilating emotionally, becoming increasingly resentful, at this late date, of their fellow Americans for celebrating Christmas.” Sailer went on to quote at length from a column by the purportedly Jewish writer, Bert Prelutsky, called “The Jewish Grinch Who Stole Christmas.”…

By 2005, Fox News personalities Bill O’Reilly and John Gibson were dedicating entire shows to the War on Christmas. While their rants were directed at “secular progressives,” they echoed the arguments of Brimelow’s allies.

Why that whole multiculturalism thing matters

Posted by Charles II on December 10, 2008

Via Avedon Carol, this priceless tale of why it pays to learn the other fellow’s language. Clifford Coonan, London Independent:

A respected research institute wanted Chinese classical texts to adorn its journal, something beautiful and elegant, to illustrate a special report on China. Instead, it got a racy flyer extolling the lusty details of stripping housewives in a brothel.

There were red faces on the editorial board of one of Germany’s top scientific institutions, the Max Planck Institute, after it ran the text of a handbill for a Macau strip club on the front page of its latest journal. Editors had hoped to find an elegant Chinese poem to grace the cover of a special issue, focusing on China, of the MaxPlanckForschung journal, but instead of poetry they ran a text effectively proclaiming “Hot Housewives in action!” on the front of the third-quarter edition. …

The Max Planck Institute was quick to acknowledge its error explaining that it had consulted a German sinologist prior to publication of the text. “To our sincere regret … it has now emerged that the text contains deeper levels of meaning, which are not immediately accessible to a non-native speaker,” the institute said in an apology. …

Another valuable tip: have the tattoo checked out by a native speaker before you have it made permanent.

Smart man. He knows that even if he defeated Huckabee’s and Palin’s Fundie Armies, he’d go down in flames in the general.

Toyota Workers In Kentucky In 2006 Out-Earned UAW Workers

Posted by Phoenix Woman on December 10, 2008

Wow! Does this mean they earned more than $73 an hour? No.

Does it mean that the GOP/Media Complex is lying when they push the $73 an hour figure as a UAW salary? Yes. (As the article on the Kentucky Toyota plant states, UAW salaries in 2006 averaged around $27 an hour.) (h/t Rayne.)

Remember this as you see the Republicans pushing their union-busting zombie lies about the proposed auto bailout.
