In Which Secretary Clinton Bests Several Republican Clowns Without Getting Her Hair Mussed

Posted by Phoenix Woman on April 22, 2009

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee and ably dispatched the best — or rather, worst — the Republicans could throw at her:

I am watching SOS Hillary Clinton’s testimony to the House Foreign Affairs committee on CNN.com whereupon some Republican congressman (Dana Rohrabacher) asked about the wisdom in releasing the torture memos, and went on to quote Dick Cheney’s statement to Fox News that torture works to keep us safe. He continued with Cheney’s claim that there are memos that show that torture techniques work. Hillary abruptly cut the congressman saying acerbically:

“It won’t surprise you that I don’t consider him (Dick Cheney) a particularly reliable source of information … I believe we ought to get to the bottom of this”

It gets even better from there.

Words Have Meaning

Posted by MEC on April 22, 2009

…Except when you’re a Republican. For Republicans, words only have propaganda value.

From Saul Anuzis, with whom I am much too familiar from when he was head of the Michigan Republican Party, we have this little gem of Humpty-Dumpty semantics:

Anuzis has turned to provocation with a purpose. He calls the president’s domestic agenda “economic fascism.”

“We’ve so overused the word ‘socialism’ that it no longer has the negative connotation it had 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago,” Mr. Anuzis said. “Fascism — everybody still thinks that’s a bad thing.”

Please note that Anuzis is not saying President Obama’s agenda is fascist. He’s only saying it’s politically useful to call it fascist because of the kneejerk emotional reaction he expects it to evoke.

What makes this stupid as well as evil is that decades of using “fascist” to mean “a political something that I disagree with”, from hippies calling police “fascist pigs” in the 1960s on down, has made the word pretty much meaningless. The only reaction using it will evoke is, “So you got nothin’.”

Well, Well

Posted by Phoenix Woman on April 22, 2009

The surprise isn’t that some right-wing yahoo is going around spreading a bogus e-mail — an e-mail in which he claims to have detailed knowledge of how Captain Phillips was rescued from the Somali pirates, and that President Obama had allegedly opposed the Pentagon’s plan to rescue him. The surprise is that a mainstream media entity is actually bothering to debunk it:

Two senior military officials who talked to NBC about this both said essentially they have no reason to carry President Obama’s water on this, but that he and the White House responded quickly and positively to the military’s request.

Given some of the details included in the email, military officials say it could very well have come from a “disgruntled” Navy SEAL who had no idea what the White House and senior commanders were planning or executing.

In addition, the email was originally passed around by a former admiral who retired in 1982 who told Navy officials he doesn’t know any Navy SEALS and has no idea where the original email came from.

This has been duly passed along to the fine folks at Snopes.com.
