And now for the important news

Posted by Charles II on September 15, 2009

AP in The Guardian says that in 2010, the Universal Orlando Resort will open an attraction called The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. One ride is called The Forbidden Journey and traverses a 700 ft high Hogwarts Castle. You get on a train at Hogsmeade, board the Hogwarts Express, and don’t leave Wizarding World until you’re done. There are shops such as Ollivanders which sells magic wands, and at the Three Broomsticks Restaurant, you can have Butterbeer. Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans are of course available at Honeydukes. You may buy quidditch gear at Dervish and Banges.

ALERT: McCain, Coburn Trying To Gut Rail-Trails

Posted by Phoenix Woman on September 15, 2009

The following is a message from the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy:

Speak up for Trails, Walking and Biking Now
On Tuesday, September 15, Senators John McCain (Ariz.) and Tom Coburn (Okla.) issued two amendments to the FY10 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill. If passed, these amendments would eliminate the majority of available federal funds for trails, walking and bicycling.

Amendment 2370 would prohibit the use of federal funds for pedestrian or bicycle facilities, efforts to reduce vehicle collisions with wildlife, or other specified Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects if the Highway Trust Fund cannot cover unfunded highway authorizations.

Amendment 2371 would allow states to eliminate spending on TE, the nation’s largest funding source for trails, walking and bicycling. Congress currently sets aside a portion of federal funds for TE to support these projects in all states.

Providing opportunities for Americans to walk, bike and take transit to get where they’re going improves our communities’ health and livability, reduces emissions, creates jobs and save money.

If you know who your senators are, their phone numbers are listed here (in the format 202-224-xxxx). To look up your senators by state and find their phone numbers, go here.

Next, please call your senators with the following message:

I am calling from (city, state) to urge that Senator ______ vote against Amendments 2370 and 2371 to H.R. 3288. These amendments would jeopardize essential Transportation Enhancements projects such as trails and other walking and bicycling infrastructure. These projects are highly valued in my community, and we need more safe and convenient opportunities to walk and bike. How does Senator _____ plan to vote on these amendments?

It is best to use your own words. If you personalize your comments, please be sure to end your call by asking how the senator plans to vote. This is critical information for us to have, and puts the office on notice that they will be accountable.

Once you have made your calls, please tell us how they went (below) so we can track progress and plan next steps. Thank you.

Go and do!

Honduras Coup, Act III, Day 54

Posted by Charles II on September 15, 2009

Again, limited posting.

Update: Laura Carlsen has a piece worth reading about the money leaking into Honduras. The Interamerican Development Bank approved four loans, two on June 24th, one on June 25th, and one on June 26th. This was surely done with knowledge of an impending coup. Thanks to Bill Conroy, we know that Millenium Challenge is still pumping $100M into Honduras. And $70M in US aid will flow in, unhindered. This is a month’s worth of time and repression that the perversity of government has bought the coup.

Oscar Arias made an interesting comment that there are extremists who want to undo the government and its institutions, that in Costa Rica there are people who think this is the time for social confrontation and vengeful class warfare. He avoided a direct answer as to who these people were, but motioned at some people yelling at him and said, “Those boys, for example.” He said that events in Honduras placed the whole isthmus in danger. (this appears to be plagiarized from Esteban Mata at Nacion )

Channel 36 put out a rumor that Micheletti had been hospitalized with a heart attack. It’s not true; the channel now seems to be off the air. The EU continues to talk sanctions.

Freedom on the March
Tanks, troops, and jets show the Honduran resistance that real freedom comes from instruments of war turned on a peaceful populace

Outside of tanquetas and jets, there’s not going to be much of an Independence Day show. Only two schools and two colleges are joining in. But the resistance is holding its own party.

Adolfo Facusse says he is shocked, yes, shocked at having his visa lifted and being deported. He reserves the right to sue the State Department. The UN Human Rights Council confirmed its decision not to seat Delmer Urbizo. [Added: His full name is Jose Delmer Urbizo Panting. The UN let him in as an observer.]

Channel 36 is showing the demo. Normal victory is at hand rhetoric. A warning that a van marked with school markings is going to contain thugs.

Rewriting History With Jonah Goldberg!

Posted by Phoenix Woman on September 15, 2009

TBogg catches the Doughy Pantload whining on Twitter:

“I blame Jeri Ryan and Mike Ditka for all of America’s problems. If she only lightened up, her husband would have beat Obama in ’04.”

TBogg has documented the whole sex-club scene — where Jack Ryan forced his then-wife to tearfully submit to various group-sex engagements — so there’s no need to go over again here how ridiculous and callous Goldberg’s “lighten up” demand is. Instead, I will focus on the other area where he’s wrong — namely, in pushing the idea that if only the Ryans’ divorce records weren’t released, he would have cruised to victory over Obama in the Senate race.

Well before Ryan’s divorce files were released, Obama was beating the Great White Hope by 19 points in the Trib poll, eight points in the Southtown poll, 16 points in the Wilson poll, and 19 points in the Harstad poll.

Sorry, Jonah: Jack Ryan was going down no matter what.
