Out of work? With Republicans in control of the Senate calendar, you’re out of luck.

From Baucus of the Senate Finance Committee:

Washington, DC – Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) today urged his colleagues to support a short-term extension of eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits and assistance in paying COBRA health insurance premiums for unemployed workers, while Congress works to pass a longer-term extension. Without an extension, eligibility for these programs is set to expire at the end of March.

“These benefits are the only thing keeping food on the table for many folks in Montana and across the country who are struggling to find jobs and make ends meet,” Baucus said. “I implore my colleagues not to stand in the way of extending unemployment and COBRA insurance so hard-working American families and communities don’t lose the benefits they depend on for survival as we work to create jobs and pass a more permanent solution.”

Republicans in the Senate objected today to passage of the Continuing Extension Act of 2010, H.R. 4851, a 30-day extension of eligibility for unemployment insurance and COBRA benefits that would prevent American families and communities from losing the benefits they depend on for survival in this tough economy.

Sure, why not delay unemployment checks and perhaps deny health insurance to innocent people just to express displeasure over the fact that you’re lying losers, Republicans? To turn silver-tongued Max Baucus into a leader purely by contrast with your own bad behavior is a real accomplishment.

A war on whales? Alternate universes?

Posted by Charles II on March 26, 2010

This via Avedon Carol’s Sideshow at Distant Ocean. Apparently Obama is actively seeking to end the ban on whaling. As much as I take exception to singling out one species for protection, ending the ban on whaling is A Bad Thing. The Japanese have no sense about this, sad to say, and will if allowed to, hunt the creatures to extinction, and then, too late, be very sorry.

Also via Avedon, Paul Krugman interviews Charlie Stross on The Trade of Queens at FDL. I may be forced to re-examine science fiction after having given it up when the reactionaries and the looneytarians became ascendant.

By the way, I am creating a new tag for fantasy and science fiction, which could be useful to describe happenings in the Tea Party.

Dog Bites Man. Sun Rises In East. Eric Cantor Lies.

Posted by Phoenix Woman on March 26, 2010

Anyone with access to a TV yesterday got to see Eric Cantor not only join other Republicans in huffily blaming the Democrats for the wave of teabagger-inflicted violence the Dems are suffering in the wake of the health care bill’s passage, but insisting that he, too, was the target of political violence.

It only took a couple of hours to find out he was lying (h/t Blue Texan):

According to police, Eric Cantor was mistaken. His staff office in Richmond, Va. was not targeted by political extremists as he claimed earlier today with so much partisan pizazz. Instead, a bullet fired into the air at 1 a.m. on Tuesday happened to fall at just such a trajectory that it punctured the office’s front window and fell some inches from it.

Police in Richmond said late Thursday that bullet was fired randomly, and that Cantor’s office was in no way the target.

Will Cantor apologize? Will James O’Keefe apologize for producing his heavily-edited and padded-after-the-fact ACORN smear job? Somehow I doubt it.
