More GOP Stenography From The Star Tribune

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 14, 2011

Bluestem Prairie’s Sally Jo Sorensen, once again kicking the asses of the rocking-chair media, notes that the Star Tribune’s Washington, DC correspondent Kevin Diaz reproduced without comment or question a claim by unnamed Republicans that Minnesota’s First District congressman, Tim Walz, “has racked up $132 million in earmarks — projects that would benefit his southern Minnesota district. . .”

Um, except he didn’t. The only $132 million in earmarks Sorensen finds associated with Walz just happens to be a list of those he’s sponsored or co-sponsored over the two-year period from 2008 to 2010 — and only $4.5 million of which happen to be Walz’ alone. In fact, as Sorensen points out, over half of the requested earmarks listed were requested by Republicans.

As Sorensen states:

Earlier this year, the Columbia Journalism Review chastized another reporter at the paper for its coverage, first noted locally by City Pages in Star Tribune Bachmann coverage slammed by watchdog. Like the other reporter, Diaz seems to have repeated a factual claim by his Republican sources–whomever they are–without bothering to check how closely those claims adhere to the truth.

Sadly, this isn’t that surprising from the paper that dumped Nick Coleman, who was an actual journalist before he got his column, for yet another right-wing screecher.
