Honduran dictatorship, day 417

Posted by Charles II on February 27, 2011

As usual, Adrienne, RAJ/RNS, and Brother John are doing the heavy lifting on covering this story. Adrienne helped co-edit an issue of NACLA that reviews the three recent coups in the Western Hemisphere, i.e. Venezuela, Haiti, and Honduras. Behind the paywall, Rodolfo Pastor Fasquelle has an article. Also, Adrienne makes available Dario Euraque’s opus on the coup, which I may get to read some time in 2012. RNS has some important posts (here and here) on the price of beans and how government subsidies appear to be instead simply used to help speculators drive up prices. IMO, Bush played a similar game with the national oil reserve, so this is a theme that we should be aware of. Brother John has a good post on the moral blindness that lets the wealthy of a nation ignore their role in poverty.

The Resistance, which our media mischaracterizes as “Zelaya supporters” has reportedly decided not to engage in the upcoming elections. I’m waiting for an official announcement on Vos el Soberano or some source more reliable than the Associated Press, but it’s probably true.

There was a march bycamisas blancas in San Pedro Sula. Just not against state violence. The Alianza Democratica refused to talk politics. Incredible that an anti-Zelayist organization gets international press for getting 25,000 people to agree that violence is bad, while the Resistance gets no press for a million signatures demanding a Constitutional Convention.

There’s much more going on. The Resistance is still very much alive.

Why The GOP/Media Complex Will Largely Ignore Anonymous’ Attack On Koch

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 27, 2011

It’s usually a really big deal in the press when some corporation or other large entity has its websites hacked and cracked. But it won’t be today — and not just because it’s Oscar night.

The reason? The attack was launched against Koch Industries by the collective “Anonymous” in an effort to draw attention to the extent of Koch’s holdings, and drawing attention to the extent of Koch’s holdings — and thus their vulnerability to boycotts — is not something the media outlets, ever hungry for advertising dollars in a world where the internet is taking away the profitability of all other media, are willing to do even if the media moguls weren’t themselves GOP-friendly.

As Anonymous stated the day before when their intentions were announced:

Koch Industries, and oligarchs like them, have most recently started to manipulate the political agenda in Wisconsin. Governor Walker’s union-busting budget plan contains a clause that went nearly un-noticed. This clause would allow the sale of publicly owned utility plants in Wisconsin to private parties (specifically, Koch Industries) at any price, no matter how low, without a public bidding process. The Kochs have helped to fuel the unrest in Wisconsin and the drive behind the bill to eliminate the collective bargaining power of unions in a bid to gain a monopoly over the state’s power supplies.

The Koch brothers have made a science of fabricating ‘grassroots’ organizations and advertising campaigns to support them in an attempt to sway voters based on their falsehoods. Americans for Prosperity, Club for Growth and Citizens United are just a few of these organizations. In a world where corporate money has become the lifeblood of political influence, the labor unions are one of the few ways citizens have to fight against corporate greed. Anonymous cannot ignore the plight of the citizen-workers of Wisconsin, or the opportunity to fight for the people in America’s broken political system. For these reasons, we feel that the Koch brothers threaten the United States democratic system and, by extension, all freedom-loving individuals everywhere. As such, we have no choice but to spread the word of the Koch brothers’ political manipulation, their single-minded intent and the insidious truth of their actions in Wisconsin, for all to witness.

The media may not give this as much attention as, say, Charlie Sheen’s latest meltdowns. But rest assured that the game is on and the gauntlet thrown. The Kochs will now be going after Anonymous full-bore — quietly, obviously, but no less fiercely for all that. With any luck, it might serve to distract the Kochs from destroying America’s middle class.

Walker Orders Capitol Police To Clear Building At 4PM – But Will They?

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 27, 2011

As David Dayen, who is reporting from the Rotunda of the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, mentions, the Capitol Police have been ordered by Scott Walker to clear the building by 4:00 pm today.

But will they? A recent Dayen Tweet calls this into question:

My sense is that the Capitol police don’t quite know yet how they will clear this building

Sit tight, everyone. Things could get interesting. Smoke ’em if ya got ’em.
