Christians Being Christian

Posted by MEC on March 11, 2012

Here in southeastern Michigan, an Evangelical church is producing a play with a message of compassion for gays.

The play will be a fundraiser for The Trevor Project, which provides a 24-hour suicide prevention hotline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth.

[The church’s pastor, the Rev. Bill] Barnwell said the church is conservative by most standards, but is taking a stand against the harsh mistreatment of the gay community.

Barnwell said if a church proclaims to be pro-life, then its leaders and members should care about the lives of gay teenagers.

Whatsoever you do for the least of these…

What’s particularly sad is that the jihad against gays relies on an erroneous reading of scripture. The key passage is Romans 1, in which Paul condemns equally heterosexual sex and homosexual sex as idolatry rather than as sexuality, and actually condemns as the worst sins things like hatred, malice, and gossip which are endemic to the church and every other human institution.

This point is way too subtle for most fundamentalist preachers to grasp, but (a) he was probably introducing the sexytalk to rope in his listeners, only to do a clever bait and switch to condemn all those who were fixated on sexual sin as being worse than the people they were condemning, and (b) his basic theological point is that people look to one another rather than to God in seeking the greatest truth and joy. Sex can be a miraculous experience of empathy with another human being, but worship can be a miraculous experience of empathy with all creation.

Most of the references to homosexuality in the New Testament are based on dubious translations of obscure language that probably refers specifically to temple prostitution or those who have sex with children. The only real authority for condemnation of homosexuality qua sexuality is in the Old Testament.

And if Jews have found it in their hearts to forgive/accept, why are Christians lagging so far behind in humanity?
