Obama victory margin up to 3%

Posted by Charles II on November 18, 2012

The Republicans want to say the election was close.

It was not.

As Charlie Cook says, the Republicans are engaging in wishful thinking in presenting this as a close election. They

have now lost the popular vote in five of the past six presidential elections, from 1992 on. For the GOP, this was more than one bad night.

Update: More people voted for Democratic House members than for Republican House members. This margin is likely to grow. The Republican maintain a majority only because of the gerrymandering they did in 2010.

  1. The gerrymandering is why they’re going to focus like a laser beam on controlling the state houses, which of course determine how congressional districts are crafted.

At what point does national gerrymandering violate the principle of equal protection? It should not be possible for a party to gain fewer votes in congressional elections yet have an absolute majority in the House. In North Carolina, they got under half of the votes for congressmen, but got 70% of the congressional delegation. That’s got to be near the theoretical maximum one can obtain by cramming half the Democrats into Democrats-only districts and putting the rest in majority-Republican districts.

It sounds like there’s certainly room in some states for Court challenges to the districts as they stand.
