ALEC, Asbestos, And Lung Disease

Posted by Phoenix Woman on November 11, 2013

11/11/2013 UPDATE — I just got word from Susan Vento that ALEC’s minions are pushing this bill again. Her comments are below:

Unfortunately this awful, wretched anti-victim/anti-veteran bill is continuing to move through the house (as part of tort reform week). …

Again, our campaign site is and the petition to showcase opposition to the FACT Act is here:

Pop Tort recently posted a quick highlight here:

So when Susan Vento, his wife, writes to me about an important cause, I pay attention:

My name is Susan Vento, and I am writing to you about a cause very close to my heart. My husband, Bruce, was a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives until October 10th, 2000 when he died of pleural mesothelioma––a rare disease caused by asbestos exposure. As of yesterday, asbestos companies began using their political influence to push a new bill into Congress, led by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). It is called the “Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency (FACT) Act.” On top of mass privacy concerns, this bill would delay and, in some cases, deny justice to people suffering from asbestos-related diseases. The FACT Act marks the beginning of a state-by-state strategy to dismantle the rights of victims.

In the name of so-called “transparency,” the bill places burdensome reporting requirements…

Former FOX Exec Runs CBS News, Oversaw 60 Minutes’ Discredited Benghazi Report

Posted by Phoenix Woman on November 11, 2013

Something that makes me, at least, go ‘hmmm’:

The President of CBS News is David Rhodes, who assumed the post in February of 2011. His bio on the CBS website tells us something of his professional past:

“Rhodes began his career as a Production Assistant at the newly-launched Fox News Channel in 1996, where he later became Vice President of News. At the network he managed coverage of three presidential elections, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, hurricanes including Katrina, and was the channel’s Assignment Manager on the news desk the morning of September 11, 2001.”

What this tells us is that Rhodes was a top executive at Fox News during the hotly contested 2000 presidential election where Fox mistakenly called the state of Florida (and thus the nation) for George W. Bush. He was there when Fox News was cheerleading for the U.S. to invade Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, and did not pose any threat to America. He was there when Fox was defending Bush’s disastrous response to Hurricane Katrina. He was there during the economic meltdown of 2008 to make sure that it was blamed on poor people buying homes and the Democrats in Congress. He was there when Fox was hyping electoral attacks against candidate Obama that included maligning ACORN, advancing associations with Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers, and of course, the everlasting nonsense of birtherism.

This helps explain why CBS News reacted far more harshly in 2004 to a Dan Rather story that had plenty of documentation besides the questioned Killian memos (the main attack on which was based on the false claim that the type font used didn’t exist on typewriters of the time) than they have so far to a Lara Logan story that rested totally upon the lies of a person who falsely claimed to be an eyewitness of the Benghazi attack.
