Yet Another Reason To Back Keeping Pelosi

Posted by Phoenix Woman on November 8, 2010

The Blue Dog challenging her, Heath Shuler, is an anti-choice dipwad, and a C Streeter:

Shuler is also anti-choice, with an 85 percent rating from the National Right to Life Committee.  And he’s proud of it.  I’m not sure whether this is “worse,” but according to Jeff Sharlet, he also is a member of the “C Street crowd.” He of course voted for the Stupak Amendment in the health reform bill, but after it was in there, opposed passage of the final bill

There’s more at the link.

Henry Waxman Gets Tough With The DINOs

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 24, 2009

More like this, please!

House Energy and Commerce chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) says his panel’s Blue Dogs must relent, or he and leaders will move health care legislation directly to the floor, bypassing the committee altogether.

This morning, he told reporters that Blue Dogs are trying to “eviscerate” the landmark legislation. “I won’t allow them to hand over control of our committee to Republicans,” Waxman said.

“I dont see what other alternative we have, because we’re not going to let them empower Republicans on the committee.”

As Jane says, the Blue Dogs are trying to load this thing down with pork for the already rich. Waxman’s decided not to let them get away with the shakedown.

UPDATE: Looks like getting tough is working — Waxman has just announced a breakthrough in the talks.

Things I Will Never Understand

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 22, 2009

Things I Will Never Understand: Why some people still think that a Hillary Clinton presidency would have been all that much different from a Barack Obama one. (Well, aside from perhaps President HRC’s possibly openly backing Lanny Davis’ efforts on behalf of the Honduran golpistas, as opposed to President BHO’s condemning the golpistas and cutting off aid to them.)

Case in point: Health care reform. Obama is about to do what the Clintons couldn’t pull off fifteen years ago, and yet there are some out there who think that we’d already have gone much, much farther if only she were in charge. Oh, really? If she and Bill still have pull, why aren’t they using it to rein in Mike Ross? Or are they afraid he’d blow them off?

Targeting The Blue Dogs On Health Care

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 20, 2009

Slinkerwink over at Daily Kos has a new diary on how to target those Blue Dogs on the Energy and Commerce Committee.

They’re the ones who are refusing to vote for the passage of health care reform out of Waxman’s committee. They are the ones blocking health care reform from happening in the House of Representatives.

Slink and Jane et al have thought about the best way to deal with these Blue Dog Democrats onthe Energy and Commerce Committee, since they tend to care more about local pressure than national pressure. Turns out that a letter to the editor in their local newspaper scares them a lot more than anything else does–because that local newspaper reaches hundred thousands of people in their district. And those readers are what a Blue Dog Democrat cares about because they represent votes to that Blue Dog.

Jane’s come up with letter-writing tools targeting the districts of these Blue Dogs. Each tool comes with talking points and advice tailored to that particular Blue Dog and that particular district. Here they are:

Write About What John Barrow Is Doing To Kill Health Reform

Write About What Mike Ross Is Doing To Kill Health Reform

Write About What Baron Hill Is Doing To Kill Health Reform

Write About What Bart Gordon Is Doing To Kill Health Reform

Write About What Jim Matheson Is Doing To Kill Health Reform

Write About What Charlie Melancon Is Doing To Kill Health Reform

Write About What Zachary Space Is Doing To Kill Health Reform

You know what to do. Go to it!

Guess What? Real Health Care Reform Will Save Us Billions Right Away

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 20, 2009

Slinkerwink, Capitol Hill denizen and longtime Kossack, has been stopping by FDL lately with posts on health care reform. Her latest discusses the following:

Last night, Speaker Pelosi wrote a blog post on her website about the House health care bill from the Tri-Committee staff that showed it as being deficit neutral and that it would yield a $6 billion surplus. This is huge news because it cuts off arguments from so-called “fiscal conservatives” like moderate Democrats, Republicans, and Blue Dog Democrats that the current House health bill isn’t deficit-neutral.

It certainly does!

Lesson: They’ll cave for the GOP. They’ll also cave for us.

Posted by Charles II on July 10, 2009

There’s nothing mysterious about the Blue Dogs. They’re opportunists, people who love the high salaries and great bennies of working in Washington. If you want to get their vote, threaten to upset their happy little nirvana by facing a primary. That’s the lesson to be learned from this one. From Brian Beutler of TPM:

Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR)–a key Democratic hold out on the question of a public option–is starting to cave. In an op-ed in today’s Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Lincoln echoes the party line–“Health care reform must build upon what works and improve inefficiencies”–then breaks with her old position: Individuals should be able to choose from a range of quality health insurance plans. Options should include private plans as well as a quality, affordable public plan or non-profit plan that can accomplish the same goals as those of a public plan.

We’d rather they were Democrats by nature, but if they can be beaten into shape, they’ll do.

Atrocity of the day/updated/corrected

Posted by Charles II on May 1, 2009

The atrocity of the day is that Blue Dog Senate Democrats voted down mortgage relief which, in addition to helping keep people in their homes, would have also enjoined DoJ to prosecute fraud and opened up credit for us hoi polloi (here’s the roll call). This is what I sent my people in Congress:

I am writing to urge that, for the good of both the Congress and the nation, public financing of elections be given a high priority for passage in this session.

Very frankly, what is going on in the Congress looks to the ordinary citizen like organized corruption. When Senator Durbin said that “the banks own the place,” he was saying what we feel. Did the people of this country want to defeat S.896, a measure that would have provided mortgage relief? No, it was the banks that wanted defeat.

And—even if the vote was tainted by campaign contributions—was is in the best interests of the nation? No: the economic downturn is driven by foreclosures and the fear that they engender. This vote will inevitably lead to more damage to the economy.

The Congress faces great pressures in raising funds. The resistance of Republicans to reforming this corrupt system verges on the fanatical. It therefore falls on the shoulders of those who believe in clean government—and I count you among them—to force the issue.

All 40 Republicans voted Nay. ElevenTwelve Democrats joined them: Baucus, Michael Bennet, Byrd, Carper, Dorgan, Johnson, Landrieu, Lincoln, Nelson, Pryor, ::cough:: Specter, Tester.

Conservatives, ConservaDems block middle class tax cut and honest budgets

Posted by Charles II on March 30, 2009

Bernie Horn of the Campaign for America’s future has a worthwhile article on what the budget battle is really about.

They’d like us to continue to lie about the true costs of government rather than have an honest budget, so they’ll scream about deficits.

They want to block a middle class tax cut while preserving tax cuts for the rich, so they’ll scream about how this hurts small business (like they ever did anything for small business).

They want to protect the profits of the insurance companies while letting 16,000 Americans die every year from lack of health insurance, so they’ll scream about socialism.

They want to let coal companies continue to profit from pollution, so they’ll block the woefully inadequate cap-and-trade proposal.

In short, they are a disgrace and need to be removed from office. But all things in due time. Right now, they need letters and phone calls from you.

Dog The Blue Dogs

Posted by Phoenix Woman on March 19, 2009

As Kagro X says, Evan Bayh and his fellow Blue Dogs, in the midst of making oppositional noises against Obama’s budget, call themselves “moderates” when in fact their positions go against strongly-held public opinions.

Let’s remind them that their corporate paymasters aren’t the only ones capable of rocking their world.

Thursday Morning News Roundup

cat-herding.jpg

— If the Gang of Fourteen Plus Lieberman really hates earmarks as much as they say they do, then how come the effort to strip some from the budget bill just failed?

— Contrast this silly posturing with President Obama’s putting the war profiteers on notice.

— I love Margaret and Helen.

— Oh, and somebody must have threatened to use force of arms to get Turdblossom to show up and testify before Congress.

— Meanwhile, Sasha and Malia can now play on a new swing set while their daddy watches them from his home office.
