Tunch crosses Rainbow Bridge

Posted by Charles II on July 13, 2013

Via Fonsia at DK, a day of mourning indeed. John Cole’s cat Tunch died prematurely and needlessly.

We shall miss her him.

(Thanks to PW for the gender correction. I always thought Tunch was male, but misread the obit).

Cats, Humans of Japan’s “Cat Island” Survived Quake, Tsunami; Could Use Some Help

Posted by Phoenix Woman on March 20, 2011

Because we all could use some good news:

Tashirojima, otherwise known as Japan’s “Cat Island” due to its numerous feline inhabitants, is intact after the recent devastating 9-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami, according to Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support. However, like so many others devastated by the disaster, both the human and feline residents of the island need help.

Contact Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue for more information.

The Walk For Animals

Posted by Phoenix Woman on April 23, 2010

They're a total blam-blam!

The annual Twin Cities Animal Humane Society‘s Walk for Animals is coming up soon, and if you’d like to sponsor a team, now is the time to do it.

I’m helping out a team called “Suffragette Kitties” on behalf of a friend of mine whose co-worker is on the team. Their team logo is at the top of this post. (And if you’re wondering about the name, click here.)

More on the dangers of pet ownership

Alfie the Arsonist

From the Beeb:

A family had to escape their blazing home during the night after their dog managed to knock their cooker on and set their kitchen on fire.

Accidental arsonist Alfie – now dubbed the “Alfonist” by the family – turned on a griddle attachment, which had a deep fat fryer on top.

Paul Gregson, his wife and two sons were alerted by the smoke alarm, but managed to get out safely with Alfie.

The house in Llanfairfechan, Conwy, suffered thousands of pounds of damage.

A cat would never have done this.

Accidentally, anyway.

Thursday Morning Calico Cat Blogging

Posted by Phoenix Woman on April 23, 2009

A calico kitty managed to sneak onto the field during a Cubs game in Chicago. Fortunately, she managed to survive the experience and is now living at a local animal shelter under a vet’s care:

A veterinarian who was at the game took the cat after it was captured by a security guard and deposited tail-first into the box seats down the left field line.

The veterinarian plans to care for the cat the next 7-10 days, hoping that the owner shows up to Wrigley to claim it.

“If not, I’m sure it will find a good home,” Chase said.

There was no ID on the cat, so its name is unknown. A Wrigley groundskeeper said it should be named “Ozzie,” after White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who claims to have seen giant rats in Wrigley Field.

The kitty is almost certainly a she-kitty, as most calicos are female.

Socks Is About To Cross The Rainbow Bridge

Posted by Phoenix Woman on December 15, 2008

Sad news about Betty Currie’s best friend:

Socks the cat, probably the most photographed presidential kitty in history, has cancer and isn’t expected to live. “His days are numbered,” says Barry Landau, a friend of Socks’ master, Betty Currie. Landau, a presidential historian and author of The President’s Table, tells our Suzi Parker that the Currie family could have put Socks on feeding tubes, but decided against it. “They fear he is too old,” adds Landau, who is writing a book on presidential inaugurations. And a second source told us that Socks is gravely ill.

In recent years, Socks has been hanging out at Currie’s Hollywood, Md., home and sometimes making guest appearances. But since we last wrote about Socks, his conditions have worsened and included weight loss and kidney problems. Southern Maryland Newspapers Online did a wonderful story about this last year, quoting Currie’s husband Bob saying what lots of us pet owners say: Socks “lives better than I do.”

Ave atque vale, Socks! You will be missed.
