Darrell Issa Burns A Few US Agents In Libya, Just So He Can Look Good On The Sunday Talk Shows

Posted by Phoenix Woman on October 20, 2012

Remember when Dick Cheney and Scooter Libby burned a high-value CIA agent, Valerie Plame, in revenge for her husband Joe Wilson’s proclaiming that a key Bush-Cheney pretext for the invasion of Iraq — the alleged Niger yellowcake shipments — was bogus?

Now we find that, just so he could score some political points, Darrell Issa, former car thief and now a guy who at $500 million in wealth is the richest member of Congress, just outed a number of currently working CIA operatives, many of whom are in-country Libyans and who were doing some important projects in addition to their CIA work:

One of the cables released by Issa names a woman human rights activist who was leading a campaign against violence and was detained in Benghazi. She expressed fear for her safety to U.S. officials and criticized the Libyan government.

“This woman is trying to raise an anti-violence campaign on her own and came to the United States for help. She isn’t publicly
associated with the U.S. in any other way but she’s now named in this cable. It’s a danger to her life,” the administration official said.

Another cable names a Benghazi port manager who is working with the United States on an infrastructure project.

“When you’re in a situation where Ansar al-Sharia is a risk to Americans, an individual like this guy, who is an innocent civilian
who’s trying to reopen the port and is doing so in conjunction with Americans, could be at risk now because he’s publicly affiliated with America,” the official said, referring to the group thought to have led the Benghazi attack.

One cable names a local militia commander dishing dirt on the inner workings of the Libyan Interior Ministry. Another cable names
a militia commander who claims to control a senior official of the Libyan armed forces. Other cables contain details of conversations between third-party governments, such as the British and the Danes, and their private interactions with the U.S., the U.N., and the Libyan governments over security issues.

“It betrays the trust of people we are trying to maintain contact with on a regular basis, including security officials inside
militias and civil society people as well,” another administration official told The Cable. “It’s a serious betrayal of trust for us and it hurts our ability to maintain these contacts going forward. It has the potential to physically endanger these people. They didn’t sign up for that. Neither did we.”

Again, does this remind you of how Cheney and Scooter Libby outed Valerie Plame — and her entire in-country network of Iraqi contacts — just to get back at her hubby Joe Wilson for saying that he didn’t find any WMDs or WMD precursors in Niger?

The main difference here, besides the fact that this information, though sensitive and tightly held, was not classified, is this: Darrell Issa doesn’t even have the excuse of wanting revenge. He did it for cheap political posturing — and because he could do it, and could get away with it.

How Do Bachmann And Ryan Get Away With It?

Posted by Phoenix Woman on January 26, 2011

Look no further than the cowardly (and/or bought off) legacy media.

The thing about Bachmann and Ryan is that the mainstream press holds back the worst of their excesses. The press, for instance, doesn’t generally say flat-out that Ryan’s math is bullshit. And the worst stories about Bachmann — stories that could have kept her from winning her first election if the local corporate legacy media had reported them — were spiked.

But if either of these people were liberals, and tried to get away with such bullpucky, they’d have been laughed out of public life ages ago.

Once again: This is why I talk about the GOP/Media Complex.

Tom Hackbarth: Adulterer, Girlfriend Stalker, Clinic Attack Plotter?

Posted by Phoenix Woman on November 25, 2010

It’s really, really hard to look at the recent exploits of Tom Hackbarth, the Republican state representative for District 48A (Cedar), and find an explanation that is anything other than creepy, if not downright sinister.

It seems that back on November 16, the anti-choice Hackbarth, who was openly carrying and displaying a loaded pistol on his waist, parked his truck next to the Planned Parenthood clinic on Ford Parkway in Highland Park. Since the clinic is under constant video and other surveillance in order to thwart attempts by anti-choicers to commit violence against it or the people who enter it, he was spotted immediately and police were on the scene to talk to him.

At that point, things got very interesting very quickly.

Hackbarth got very agitated when he was questioned at the scene, to the point where the cops thought it advisable to handcuff him and take away his gun — which, since he has a permit for concealed carry, was later returned to him. The cops described his behavior as like that of a stalker.

What was the eight-term legislator doing with a gun hanging around a Planned Parenthood clinic? Hackbarth, who says he is in the midst of a divorce, said he was looking for a woman he met online, someone he thought was cheating on him:

“She gave me some line of baloney, and I thought, ‘well, she’s fibbing to me.’ You could tell, and I thought, ‘well, I’m going to check it out.’ and I went there to see if she was around and her vehicle was not there.”

Interestingly enough, Hackbarth was unable to provide a phone number, street address, e-mail address, or even a last name for his internet girlfriend, whom he would only identify as “Linda”.

The incident has cost Hackbarth his position within the Republican leadership in the House, at least for now. We’ll see what happens next.

Tea Partier Andy Harris Whines For Government Handout

Posted by Phoenix Woman on November 16, 2010

This is utterly unsurprising to anyone who’s followed the “do as I say, not as I do” Republicans and their Tea Party wing for any length of time (h/t David Dayen):

A conservative Maryland physician elected to Congress on an anti-Obamacare platform surprised fellow freshmen at a Monday orientation session by demanding to know why his government-subsidized health care plan from the government takes a month to kick in.

Republican Andy Harris, an anesthesiologist who defeated freshman Democrat Frank Kratovil on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, reacted incredulously when informed that federal law mandated that his government-subsidized health care policy would take effect on Feb. 1 – 28 days after his Jan. 3rd swearing-in.

“He stood up and asked the two ladies who were answering questions why it had to take so long, what he would do without 28 days of health care,” said a congressional staffer who saw the exchange. The benefits session, held behind closed doors, drew about 250 freshman members, staffers and family members to the Capitol Visitors Center auditorium late Monday morning,”.

“Harris then asked if he could purchase insurance from the government to cover the gap,” added the aide, who was struck by the similarity to Harris’s request and the public option he denounced as a gateway to socialized medicine.

Harris’ minder tried lamely to do damage control, saying that he was just pointing out the flaws in evil government-run healthcare, but nobody over the age of twelve takes that seriously.

I’ll bet the dude worships Ayn Rand, too.

Shoving It Under The Rug

Posted by Phoenix Woman on October 13, 2010

I’m not surprised to see the corporate mass media try to minimize the foreign donations story. They’ve spent more time (199,000 hits per Google) on the mistress of a man whose political career ended three years ago than on the mistress of the man who still is South Carolina’s governor (46,600 hits), even though both men were at once time seriously considered to be presidential candidate material.

And there are only 19,000 Google hits for “katrina leung parlor maid republican”, even though the story concerns, at its root, how a longtime deep-cover spy for Communist China was not only a chief officer of and fundraiser for the California Republican Party, but was the mistress of James Smith, the FBI agent who was the key actor in movement Republican judge Louis Freeh’s effort to gin up the “Chinagate” fauxgate against Bill Clinton and Al Gore.

But look! Over there! Rielle Hunter had a bowel movement! Quick, get the exclusive!

Polling, Governor’s Races, And KSTP

Posted by Phoenix Woman on September 16, 2010

The following was posted, exactly as written, at the website of Republican-owned-and-anchored local TV station KSTP concerning a recent poll of theirs on the Minnesota governor’s race. We’ll see if it gets past their site moderators:

There has also been a concerted effort to treat Emmer with kid gloves lately. No local media outlets have done any examination of the truth about his family’s failed lumber and dairy businesses — we have to go to The Awl for that ( No discussion in the daily papers or the radio and TV stations of the actual scandal behind the Tripp Emmer booze busts and underage drinking photos (namely, the young woman who was set upon while unconscious, humilated by penis pictures drawn all over her face and body, and then had to put up with her photo being posted on Tripp Emmer’s Facebook:

And of course the fact that Mister Fiscal Conservative’s made-up-on-the-fly budget will actually RAISE the state debt is just mentioned in passing; if Emmer were a Democrat, the local press would be squawking day and night if he tried to get away with that.

Gee, I wonder if this might be connected to the tendency of KSTP owner Stanley Hubbard to vastly favor Republicans over Democrats (as shown by his campaign donations: and

I’m not holding my breath.

Sunday Afternoon News Roundup

Posted by Phoenix Woman on August 22, 2010

— Feminists! Don’t be a Dumb Cluck like Sarah Palin — Get your Cackle of Rads membership card today!

— Why do obvious smears and lies such as those directed against the Park51 development get so much media play? Could it be because our corporate-run, Republican-worshiping press keeps giving prime media space and respect to contemptible bigots like CNN’s Erick Erickson?

— In other news, Randy Demmer is still a twit and Tim Walz’s congressional seat is Mr. Walz’ for as long as he wants it.

— And now a not-so-recent item that is timely once more: Legalized booze, not the FBI, is what finally broke Al Capone.

Random Observations

Posted by Phoenix Woman on June 16, 2010

Attaturk hat recht hier:

I know the nation is terribly disappointed that Obama isn’t actually Red Black Adair, but I don’t miss having idiots trying to fix shit. They’d have dropped the bomb and had BP drilling for radioactive crude by now.

Regardless of what one thinks of Obama’s speech, Palin’s incoherent response should remind everyone that it was the sort of oncological, unrestrained capitalism Palin and the Republicans espouse (complete with total regulatory capture of the government entity we all thought was monitoring them) that made this crisis possible.

— Question: If somebody like Alan Grayson (with a “D” after his name) had said this instead of Joseph Cao (a freshman Republican), what’s the likelihood that David Broder and the rest of the GOP/Media Complex would be in full Tone Troll Mode, doing their level best to hound him or her out of politics?

While Everyone Was Piling On A Person Not Named Pat Buchanan Or Bill Donohue For Alleged Anti-Semitic Comments….

Posted by Phoenix Woman on June 8, 2010

The survivors of the USS Liberty observed the forty-third anniversary of the deaths of their comrades:

After surveilling USS Liberty for more than nine hours with almost hourly aircraft overflights and radar tracking, the air and naval forces of Israel attacked our ship in international waters without warning. USS Liberty was identified as a US naval ship by Israeli reconnaissance aircraft nine hours before the attack and continuously tracked by Israeli radar and aircraft thereafter. Sailing in international waters at less than five knots, with no offensive armament, our ship was not a military threat to anyone.

The Israeli forces attacked without warning and without attempting to contact us. Thirty four Americans were killed in the attack and another 174 were wounded. The ship, a $40-million dollar state-of-the-art signals intelligence platform, was later declared unsalvageable and sold for scrap.

(sarcasm mod) Hey, but who cares about that? Look, Helen Thomas got ambushed by the son of a right-wing nutjob who posts videos of himself doing racist impressions of Mexicans on his website! Catching her off-guard is much more important than a bunch of old guys and their dead murdered buddies, Right? (/sarcasm)
