Man Bites Dog. Sun Rises In East. Fareed Zakaria Does The Right Thing.

Edward Teller describes it here.

Wow. Enough people start getting brave enough to things like that, and maybe the Likudniks won’t keep dominating the US conversation WRT the Middle East.

Somebody Apparently Wants To See The Iraqi Shiite Truce With US Forces Meet A Bloody End

Posted by Phoenix Woman on June 12, 2010

Because that’s what would happen if Israel and the (ultra-Sunni) Saudis were allowed to go ahead with this really stupid move:

“The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way,” said a US defence source in the area. “They have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren’t scrambled and no one gets shot down. This has all been done with the agreement of the [US] State Department.”

Sources in Saudi Arabia say it is common knowledge within defence circles in the kingdom that an arrangement is in place if Israel decides to launch the raid. Despite the tension between the two governments, they share a mutual loathing of the regime in Tehran and a common fear of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “We all know this. We will let them [the Israelis] through and see nothing,” said one.

Passing over Iraq would require at least tacit agreement to the raid from Washington. So far, the Obama Administration has refused to give its approval as it pursues a diplomatic solution to curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Military analysts say Israel has held back only because of this failure to secure consensus from America and Arab states.

Things You Don’t See Much In US Media

Posted by Phoenix Woman on November 12, 2009

A man in Germany murdered a pregnant woman in open court in front of her husband, who was himself stabbed and shot at by apparent accident when he tried to save his wife. Why was she attacked? Because she wore an Islamic headscarf.

That reminds me: News accounts keep saying that over a hundred shots were fired by the alleged gunman in the Fort Hood shootings. Yet he only had one or perhaps two guns and was not known to have reloaded them, from any accounts I recall. Some of those bullets had to have been friendly fire.

Another victory in the American quest for the world as a Coke commercial

Posted by Charles II on August 1, 2009

Ben Quinn, The Guardian:

Six Christians were burned alive in Pakistan yesterday when hundreds of Muslims attacked and looted their homes, sparked by rumours that pages from the Qur’an had been desecrated.

The dead, including four women and a child, were killed when Christian homes were torched by hundreds of supporters of a banned Muslim organisation in the Punjabi village of Gojra, in eastern Pakistan.

Tensions have been running high between the two communities over allegations that Christians had defiled pages from the Muslim holy book, despite authorities insisting that the rumours were unfounded.

It would be really nice if the adherents of religions that claim to be peaceful could all act that way for a day or so.

Added 8/2: From Tariq Saeed, Dawn,

Federal Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti said 40 Christian homes had been torched on Saturday by the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba group, which is accused of attacking security forces and of staging bombings at public places in recent years. He said there was no truth to allegations that the Holy Quran had been defiled and accused the police of ignoring his appeal to provide protection to Christians under threat.

From Center for Defense Information:

The Sipah-I-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) – Army of the Friends of the Prophet – is a Sunni sectarian group responsible for carrying out terrorist activities against Shias in Pakistan. It has also operated as a political party, and its leaders have won elections to Pakistan’s National Assembly. … Initially called the Anjuman Sipah-I-Sahaba, the group was formed as a response to rising Shia militancy and sectarian violence in Pakistani Punjab….The SSP believes that Shias possess too much power and influence in Pakistan, and want the country to be declared a Sunni state. It aims to restore the Khilafat (Caliphate) system, while protecting Sunnis and their Shariat (Islamic laws). SSP members declare that Shias are non-Muslims and must be violently converted or suppressed …

John McCain Gaffes It Again

Posted by Phoenix Woman on March 18, 2008

John McCain, Mister Stray Talk Excess, once again showed today that his mastery of world affairs could easily be bested by a moderately-diligent sixth-grader (h/t Penman):

McCain said it was “common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that’s well known. And it’s unfortunate.”

Uh, John? Iran’s population is majority Shia Muslim. Al-Qaeda is made up of hardcore Sunni Muslims, with the leadership coming from Wahabi Sunni stronghold Saudi Arabia. (To learn more about the differences between Shia and Sunni, go here.) I mean, gee, even Joe Lieberman knows that, which is why he rushed to your aid:

A few moments later, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, standing just behind McCain, stepped forward and whispered in the presidential candidate’s ear. McCain then said: “I’m sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda.”

But Short Ride Joe can’t be around you 24/7 (I imagine both Cindy and Hadassah would be jealous), which is why you also made that gaffe yesterday and again today.

A Muslim Reformation?

Posted by Phoenix Woman on March 4, 2008

Just as there are many different kinds of Christianity, so there are many different kinds of Islam. Much hangs on the delineation of the Koran and its accompanying Hadith. The Hadith are “sayings” attributed to the Prophet Mohammed, and as such are used to interpret the Koran.

Right now the Turkish government, the most secular of the Muslim nations, is performing a review of the Hadith to determine which are genuine, as well as to see how the Hadith can be viewed in a 21st-century context.

Turkey carries a lot of weight in the Near and Middle East. As this blog author notes, how this reinterpretation is received will depend on whether it is perceived as a legitimate reinterpretation or something forced down Islamic throats by an authoritarian government.
