Tapdancing Around Terrorism

Posted by Phoenix Woman on April 5, 2010

About the only worthwhile thing to come of this NYT thumbsucker on terrorism by Scott Shane (and no, I don’t consider the attempt to create yet another false equivalency between lefties and righties worthwhile) is this passage:

“The use of the term terrorism delegitimizes the opponent,” said Martha Crenshaw, a scholar at Stanford who wrote her first essay wrestling with the definition of terrorism in 1972. “It’s not just the tactics that are discredited, it’s the cause as well.”

Discrediting the motivations in this way allows one to avoid looking at root causes, or even admitting that the people behind the motivations might be human beings instead of targets to waste in wars.

This, of course, was one of the points of the Firedoglake piece by David “DDay” Dayen that Shane cited selectively but to which he wouldn’t link. Because that might have allowed people to investigate Dayen’s post, instead of blowing it off as “he said she said” as Shane does with his false-equivalency nonsense — which, as has been shown repeatedly, is just another way of allowing conservatives and Republicans to get away with whatever they want, up to and including murder.

UPDATE: Speaking of Dayen, he made this excellent catch in his news roundup last night:

Joe Lieberman had a fine set of Sunday show appearances. He intoned in his role as President that Iran had one last chance to resolve the nuclear situation peacefully, so I guess he’ll be on the phone with NORAD in a few months if it doesn’t work. Then, he decided that domestic terror threats are not as serious as “Islamic terrorism.” Ah, the truth comes out. See, because the family of the guy who Joseph Stack killed when he flew into an IRS building in Texas feels better because at least the kamikaze pilot wasn’t a stinking Muslim.

I suppose we should at least give Lieberman points for dropping the tapdance and coming right out and saying it.

BREAKING: Lefty Blogger Appears On MSNBC, Fails To Be Crazy

Posted by Phoenix Woman on November 22, 2008

Jane Hamsher’s taking the lead on opposition to Lieberman has generated waves in the TradMed, so much so that she was invited to speak on MSNBC this morning. Watch as she lays out the case against Lieberman — and for the power of the netroots — in a calm, concise, logical manner.

Meanwhile, as Howie Klein notes, Jane was also on NPR this week — and so infuriated up-and-coming coddled righty writer Jamie Kirchick, who NPR had invited to speak after her for “balance”, that he not only bashed her on the air (and so bizarrely that the NPR host actually dared to take him to task for not having the guts to say those words when Jane was still on the air and could answer them in real time), but also in a newspaper column. Kirchick was so enraged by Hamsher that he violated a key tenet of the GOP/Media Complex: Never acknowledge the existence of the popular left in America — and especially never do so by name. Ooops.

Jonah Lieberman

Posted by Charles II on November 12, 2008

(adapted from Jonah by John August Swanson)
jonah-lieberman

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil [is] upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil [is] upon us; What [is] thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what [is] thy country? and of what people [art] thou?

–Jonah 1:6-8

McCain’s bus makes improper right turn with Lieberman aboard, smashes into car.

And the bus has an Obama sticker on it.

I’m not kidding.

In Which Senator Obama Politely Informs Senator Lieberman That He Is Officially On Notice

Posted by Phoenix Woman on June 5, 2008

I loved this from Roll Call (h/t ncaldem and TPM), describing what happened the other day when Holy Joe Lieberman did some more crapping onto Obama and Clinton on behalf of John McCain:

Furthermore, during a Senate vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation.

While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.

Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.

Still, Obama and Lieberman seemed to be trying to keep the back-and-forth congenial as they both patted each other on the back during and after the exchange.

Afterwards, Obama smiled and pointed up at reporters peering over the edge of the press gallery for a better glimpse of their interaction.

Obama loyalists were quick to express their frustration with Lieberman’s decision and warned that if he continues to take a lead role in attacking Obama it could complicate his professional relationship with the Caucus.

Short Ride Joe’s free ride is over.

This Should Kill Any Talk Of Putting Lieberman On McCain’s Ticket

Posted by Phoenix Woman on May 27, 2008

The gent we last saw offering up words of praise for McCain’s endorser, John “Israel Must Die” Hagee, is so unpopular that he can’t even deliver his own son-in-law for McCain: Rabbi Ethan Tucker is voting for Obama.

Oh, and even after his buddy McCain finally rejects and denounces Hagee, Lieberman is still embracing the guy and all he stands for:

Senator Joseph Lieberman is scheduled to headline Pastor John Hagee’s 2008 Christians United For Israel Washington-Israel Summit this July 22. In accepting Hagee’s invitation, Lieberman became the most senior elected representative confirmed to appear at the annual gala. Last year, when Lieberman spoke at Hagee’s summit, he compared the Texas televangelist to the biblical prophet Moses, dubbing him “an Ish Elochim,” or “a man of God.” Unless he rescinds his pledge to appear at this year’s summit, Lieberman can be expected to deliver another soul-stirring tribute.

Hagee’s vitriolic condemnation of Catholicism, his jeremiad declaring Hurricane Katrina divine punishment for New Orleans’ hosting of a “homosexual rally,” and his generally disturbing apocalyptic theology became national news last February when John McCain accepted his endorsement in a widely publicized ceremony.

While initially resisting pressure to reject Hagee’s endorsement, McCain finally ended his relationship with Hagee when a sermon by the preacher describing the Holocaust as the will of God registered on the mainstream media’s radar (Hear the now-infamous sermon here).

Hey, Joe: Last time I looked, Moses didn’t advocate establishing the Jews in Israel just so they could be the disposable caretakers of the staging area for the end of the world.

Lieberman: Hagee is a Moses

Be sure not to miss the senior Senator from Connecticut’s ringing endorsement of the man who’s pressing God for a new and improved Holocaust here.

Will Lieberman Apologize?

Posted by MEC on April 10, 2008

Remember when Joe Lieberman’s campaign web site crashed just before the August 2006 primary election, and he promptly accused his opponent, Ned Lamont, of sabotage?

Federal investigators have officially concluded what sensible people figured out almost immediately: It was incompetence that brought down the web site, not an attack.

“In short, the server that hosted the joe2006.com Web site failed because it was overutilized and misconfigured,” according to an Oct. 25, 2006, e-mail included in FBI documents obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press. “There was no evidence of (an) attack.”

That’s a good metaphor for Joe himself: overutilized [by cable talk shows] and misconfigured in his politics.

Don’t expect Joe the Joke to acknowledge that he was wrong. He seems to be sticking to the original story even after it’s been completely discredited:

“We were told by our Web site administrator that there was clear evidence of an outside effort to disrupt our site, and that the administrator was so certain that the site had been attacked that he was willing to swear to it in a legal affidavit,” Dan Gerstein said.

And that’s a metaphor for Lieberman himself, too. Shift the blame so you don’t have to acknowledge that you might have been wrong.

They Call Him Babylon Joe…

Posted by Phoenix Woman on April 4, 2008

…or is it “Babble On Joe“?

MIDDLE EAST: Another Iran faux pas?

Sen. Joe Lieberman was trying to portray presidential contender Barack Obama as a no-nothing on Iraq. But he may have stumbled himself, inventing a whole new militant group supposedly destabilizing Iraq.

In a Fox News interview Wednesday, the Connecticut lawmaker and backer of Republican presidential nominee John McCain said that if the U.S. heeded Obama’s advice, a group called “Al Qaeda in Iran” would have taken over Iraq.

Here’s what Lieberman said:

Sen. Obama doesn’t come to this debate with a lot of credibility. Basically on the question of Iraq, John McCain has had the guts to stand out on his own arguing for what he thought was right. And it turned out that he was right about the surge working to improve conditions in Iraq. If we did what Sen. Obama wanted us to do last year, Al-Qaeda in Iran [NOTE: SEE UPDATE BELOW] would be in control of Iraq today. The whole Middle East would be in turmoil and American security and credibility would be jeopardized.

There’s no such thing as Al Qaeda in Iran, though Al Qaeda of Iraq has given U.S. and Iraqi forces plenty of trouble.

In fact, Shiite Iran and Sunni Al Qaeda are bitter enemies, though they may have had some dealings in the past. Al Qaeda’s number two vehemently denounced Iran in an online interview that was released in recent days.

Ironically Lieberman himself corrected Sen. John McCain who alleged during a visit to Jordan last month that Al Qaeda was being trained in Iran.

There’s also very little chance that Iraq, which is 60% Shiite and 20% Kurdish, would allow Al Qaeda of Iran, Iraq or Mars to take over their country. Maybe they’d be a continued menace or nuisance, but there was little chance even a weak Iraqi government would have allowed Al Qaeda to dominate Iraq as the Taliban did when the Soviet Union left Afghanistan. The numbers just don’t work.

Of course, rather than admit being wrong, Lieberman and/or his minders have now asked and got his friends at FOX News to change their transcript to fit Lieberman’s current version of events — even though the sentence as newly-airbrushed by FOX doesn’t read like natural speech, whereas the original version with “Al-Qaeda in Iran” does. [UPDATE: As a friend of mine just said elsewhere, another point is that even if Lieberman meant to say al Qaeda and Iran” would be running Iraq, he’s basically saying they’ve be allies. That’s even stupider than the first interpretation.] As Jane said over at FDL, this is grasping at what the meaning of “in” is.

Just the sort of behavior you’d expect from a guy who rewarded the Clintons for standing with him in 2006 by backing McCain in 2008.
