John McCain Gaffes It Again

Posted by Phoenix Woman on March 18, 2008

John McCain, Mister Stray Talk Excess, once again showed today that his mastery of world affairs could easily be bested by a moderately-diligent sixth-grader (h/t Penman):

McCain said it was “common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that’s well known. And it’s unfortunate.”

Uh, John? Iran’s population is majority Shia Muslim. Al-Qaeda is made up of hardcore Sunni Muslims, with the leadership coming from Wahabi Sunni stronghold Saudi Arabia. (To learn more about the differences between Shia and Sunni, go here.) I mean, gee, even Joe Lieberman knows that, which is why he rushed to your aid:

A few moments later, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, standing just behind McCain, stepped forward and whispered in the presidential candidate’s ear. McCain then said: “I’m sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda.”

But Short Ride Joe can’t be around you 24/7 (I imagine both Cindy and Hadassah would be jealous), which is why you also made that gaffe yesterday and again today.

Some Jokes Just Write Themselves

Posted by MEC on December 16, 2007

“Independent Democrat” Joe Lieberman endorses “maverick Republican” John McCain for the Presidency.

Maybe Joe hopes to have the distinction of running for Vice President under two different parties.

Or maybe he’s just a petty, spiteful, small-minded little man who can never resist an opportunity to stick it to the party that didn’t give him the power he thinks he should have.

Life’s Little Ironies

Posted by Phoenix Woman on November 17, 2007

Guess who’s suddenly decided that blackface isn’t really that bad after all?

Why, that would be Joe Lieberman:

Just when it appeared Julie Myers had cleared every hurdle in her quest to officially become the nation’s top immigration official, a dreadlocked wig and a prisoner’s outfit could cost her the job.

Myers, director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ran into trouble earlier this month after she and two other agency managers gave the “most original” costume award to a white employee who came to the agency’s Halloween party dressed as an escaped prisoner with dreadlocks and darkened skin.

The incident drew complaints of racial insensitivity and an apology from Myers. It also cast doubt on whether she’ll get a confirmation vote before the end of the year, when her original appointment expires.

[…]

Some key lawmakers have rallied to her defense, including Joe Lieberman, the Connecticut independent who chairs the Senate Homeland Security committee, and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the panel’s top Republican.

“Senator Lieberman regrets her lapse in judgment regarding the Halloween incident,” spokeswoman Leslie Phillips said. “He is inclined to support her nomination, given the committee’s review of her entire record, the fact that the union representing 7000 ICE employees supports her and her year’s experience in office.”

But Lieberman wasn’t so forgiving of blackface back in August of 2006. Not when he could try to use it to beat up on Ned Lamont.

Oh, the irony. Not to mention the hypocrisy.

I Can’t Stand It

Posted by MEC on September 19, 2007

janus.jpg

Joe Lieberman, who created a Party Of One so he could run for re-election after being defeated in the Democratic primary; Joe Lieberman, who consistently votes with the Republicans, even unto voting against the bill to restore habeas corpus; Joe Lieberman, who — never mind, you should already know all the things Turncoat Joe has done to separate himself from the Democratic Party and obstruct the Congresional Democrats’ agenda —

has registered as a Democrat.

Words fail me.

The Onion Versus Joe Lieberman

Posted by Phoenix Woman on June 13, 2007

Guess who makes the most sense with regard to Iran?   (Hint:  It’s not the guy who, along with all his best buds, was hoodwinked by Ahmad Chalabi.)

Same Old, Same Old

Ho hum:  Sun rises in East, dog bites man, Joe Lieberman tries to backstab Harry Reid and steps on his own schwanz instead.

Taibbi’s Law

Posted by MEC on February 24, 2007

Matt Taibbi’s observation about what is and isn’t news brilliantly summarizes the folly of the so-called “news” media:

My definition of a news story involves something happening. If nothing happens, then you can’t have “news,” because nothing has changed since the day before. Britney Spears was an idiot last Thursday, an idiot on Friday, and an idiot on both Saturday and Sunday. She was, shockingly, also an idiot on Monday.

With only minor variations, this observation applies to so very many situations beyond the misadventures of the unfortunate Ms. Spears.

The most recent example is the so-called “news” media’s excitement over the possibility, or the veiled hints, or maybe just the so-called “news” media’s own wishful thinking that Joe Lieberman will join the Republican Party.

First, this is not news because It’s Not Going To Happen. Anybody who’s been paying the slightest attention will know that Lieberman has every reason not to switch parties. I don’t mean Lieberman’s repeated statements that he won’t join the Republican Party; we know exactly what his word is worth. I mean the overwhelming evidence that Lieberman’s #1 priority is his own prestige and power. He won’t get any reward for switching parties: it won’t switch control of the Senate to the Republicans, so the Republicans can’t offer him anything that will increase his prestige. He’ll just lose prestige by losing his committee chair and his seniority, which depend on his caucusing with the Democrats. Arguably worse from his point of view, he’ll lose his ability to get the Democrats to dance to his tune.

Second, it’s not news because “nothing has changed since the day before”. It doesn’t even have novelty value. “Breaking News: Lieberman Lieberman said something that clueless people interpret as a hint that he’ll switch parties, the sun rose in the east, and the Detroit Lions had a losing season.”

Here’s a clue for the so-called “news” media: Lieberman Lieberman was a dishonest weasel last Thursday, a dishonest weasel on Friday, and a dishonest weasel on both Saturday and Sunday. He was, shockingly, also a dishonest weasel on Monday. The pattern is consistent enough that you can expect him to be a a dishonest weasel into the foreseeable future. When rumors resurface that he’s going to create “news” by switching parties [again], please to remember that this is not news, and give it just as much of your attention that non-news requires, i.e. none.

And by the way, neither is it news when Lieberman issues another assurance that he’s not going to caucus with the Republicans. He’s just doing it for the attention, you should realize. The more you give him attention for making empty threats, the more he’s going to keep yanking your chain and wasting your time.

Wouldn’t you rather be spending your time covering real news stories?

 Oh, wait. Forget I asked.
