Mandiant: Anonymous Helped Expose China’s Hacking US Infrastructure

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 20, 2013

Something the NYT wouldn’t tell you, but Huffington Post will:

Security researchers and government officials have long claimed that China is behind a growing number of cyber attacks against American computer networks, a charge that China has repeatedly denied. But Mandiant’s 73-page report was unusual in its level of detail, going so far as to profile the identities of three hackers who are believed to be working for the Chinese military. Mandiant said it was able to find connections between two of those hackers and China’s People’s Liberation Army by relying on public data first revealed by the hacker group Anonymous.

In February 2011, Anonymous gained access to the website — an online forum where hackers and researchers share information about hacking techniques — and published personal data of more than 40,000 registered users online. The data included email and IP addresses.

The breach was one of dozens by Anonymous over the past two years and gained relatively little media attention. But now, two years later, security researchers say the data was valuable in helping them find links between hackers and the Chinese military.

“We are fortunate to have access to the accounts disclosed from,” the Mandiant report said.

Why The GOP/Media Complex Will Largely Ignore Anonymous’ Attack On Koch

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 27, 2011

It’s usually a really big deal in the press when some corporation or other large entity has its websites hacked and cracked. But it won’t be today — and not just because it’s Oscar night.

The reason? The attack was launched against Koch Industries by the collective “Anonymous” in an effort to draw attention to the extent of Koch’s holdings, and drawing attention to the extent of Koch’s holdings — and thus their vulnerability to boycotts — is not something the media outlets, ever hungry for advertising dollars in a world where the internet is taking away the profitability of all other media, are willing to do even if the media moguls weren’t themselves GOP-friendly.

As Anonymous stated the day before when their intentions were announced:

Koch Industries, and oligarchs like them, have most recently started to manipulate the political agenda in Wisconsin. Governor Walker’s union-busting budget plan contains a clause that went nearly un-noticed. This clause would allow the sale of publicly owned utility plants in Wisconsin to private parties (specifically, Koch Industries) at any price, no matter how low, without a public bidding process. The Kochs have helped to fuel the unrest in Wisconsin and the drive behind the bill to eliminate the collective bargaining power of unions in a bid to gain a monopoly over the state’s power supplies.

The Koch brothers have made a science of fabricating ‘grassroots’ organizations and advertising campaigns to support them in an attempt to sway voters based on their falsehoods. Americans for Prosperity, Club for Growth and Citizens United are just a few of these organizations. In a world where corporate money has become the lifeblood of political influence, the labor unions are one of the few ways citizens have to fight against corporate greed. Anonymous cannot ignore the plight of the citizen-workers of Wisconsin, or the opportunity to fight for the people in America’s broken political system. For these reasons, we feel that the Koch brothers threaten the United States democratic system and, by extension, all freedom-loving individuals everywhere. As such, we have no choice but to spread the word of the Koch brothers’ political manipulation, their single-minded intent and the insidious truth of their actions in Wisconsin, for all to witness.

The media may not give this as much attention as, say, Charlie Sheen’s latest meltdowns. But rest assured that the game is on and the gauntlet thrown. The Kochs will now be going after Anonymous full-bore — quietly, obviously, but no less fiercely for all that. With any luck, it might serve to distract the Kochs from destroying America’s middle class.
