Twin Cities Media Scooped Again: Sovereign Citizens Edition

Posted by Phoenix Woman on August 25, 2013

I was just thinking the other day that if I had depended solely on the local mainstream media (what Sally Jo Sorensen over at Bluestem Prairie calls the “rocking chair media”) for my news of my own state, I never would have known that Rod Grams’ aide Peter Hong was called “Senator Hong” on Capitol Hill because he served as the otherwise helpless Grams’ minder and babysitter.

And now I find that, once again, our local mainstream talent has been scooped on a local story, this time by the New York Times:

MINNEAPOLIS — One of the first inklings Sheriff Richard Stanek had that something was wrong came with a call from the mortgage company handling his refinancing.

“It must be a mistake,” he said, when the loan officer told him that someone had placed liens totaling more than $25 million on his house and on other properties he owned.

But as Sheriff Stanek soon learned, the liens, legal claims on property to secure the payment of a debt, were just the earliest salvos in a war of paper, waged by a couple who had lost their home to foreclosure in 2009 — a tactic that, with the spread of an anti-government ideology known as the “sovereign citizen” movement, is being employed more frequently as a way to retaliate against perceived injustices.

Over the next three years, the couple, Thomas and Lisa Eilertson, filed more than $250 billion in liens, demands for compensatory damages and other claims against more than a dozen people, including the sheriff, county attorneys, the Hennepin County registrar of titles and other court officials.

Stanek finally got the liens undone, but not before they affected his credit rating.

This story would not have surprised the late great Karl Bremer, the proprietor of Ripple in Stillwater and one of the five best journalists in the state at the time he died last year. He not only had the Sovereign Citizens angle down cold, he showed that Bradley Dean “Bradlee Dean” Smith, the infamous toxic-rock hate preacher, Minnesota conservative fixture, and occasional ally of Minnesota Republican politicians, was and might still be a part of that movement: Read the rest of this entry »

Bradlee Dean Ordered To Pay Court Costs Of His Maddow/MnIndy Silencing Suit

Posted by Phoenix Woman on July 8, 2012

Looks like Bradley Dean “Bradlee Dean” Smith, Minnesota hate preacher, radio show host, and Republican ally, forgot the first rule of SLAPPers — never sue anyone who can afford to fight you in court:

Via Ken Avidor’s Bradlee Dean Info, an interesting development in the defamation lawsuit Bradlee Dean and You Can Run International filed against MSNBC, Rachel Maddow, The Minnesota Independent and Andy Birkey:

from the D.C. Courts, dated June 25th:

Memorandum and Order Granting in Part Defendants’ Motion for Attorneys’ Fees and Denying Plaintiffs’ Combined Motions for Reconsideration and Sanctions Entered on the Docket 6/25/12. Signed in chambers 6/25/12. Electronically filed via CaseFileXPress on counsel for the parties 6/25/12. Plaintiffs shall pay to Defendants fees and costs in the amount of $24,625.23 within thirty days.

Now, Smith will likely not have much trouble ponying up the dough — preaching hate to exurban white-flighters and their descendants is quite a profitable gig:

The Minnesota Independent examined some of Smith’s financial dealings in 2009 when new IRS 990 forms showed that he and his band mates were taking a ministerial housing allowance despite his organization being a religious non-profit as opposed to a church. Those housing allowances are meant only for “duly ordained” members of the clergy. Smith has refused to answer questions related to his ordination or which church his organization belongs to.

In 2008, Smith and his sidekick MacAuley, greatly increased their compensation and housing allowance. According to the group’s most recent 990 filing, Smith was paid $51,303 salary and $45,887 for the housing allowance, raking in $97,190. MacAuley’s compensation was a bit less coming in at $66,897 in 2008.

Still, this news has got to sting Smith in his pride, if not his pocketbook — at least, it would if the local establishment media deigned to notice it. Instead, as usual, it’s the local bloggers like Ken Avidor and Sally Jo Sorensen that are breaking the scoops the local big-media outlets won’t touch.

Bradlee Dean May Run, But He Can’t Hide From Gary Schiff

Posted by Phoenix Woman on June 21, 2012

Video available here.

This cracked me up:

City Councilman Gary Schiff is challenging Bradlee Dean to a debate over Dean’s comments disparaging south Minneapolis as a “Third World country.

“You call it the Third World Bradlee Dean, I call it the Ninth Ward,” Schiff posted on Facebook. “When you are ready to crawl out of your cave, I will gladly challenge you to a debate as to who better reflects the American Dream: You, or my constituents and the better world they are creating.”

Schiff tells City Pages the challenge comes with a condition: Dean has to visit the Schiff home for dinner and share a meal with Schiff, his partner, David Barela, and Barela’s mother. ” I would hope he’s not afraid to have dinner with two gay guys and their mom,” Schiff said.

Any bets as to whether the homophobe and bigot actually shows up? Or will he run away?>

More on this can be found at Bradlee Dean Info, which broke the news and which provided the lovely graphic at the top of this page.

Bradlee Dean And The Catholic Church

Posted by Phoenix Woman on October 16, 2011

Last week, the folks of the Dump Bachmann blog got screwed by YouTube, which canceled their video accounts — and for a short while, their Gmail accounts as well.

Why? Apparently because Bradlee Dean cowed YouTube, which is owned (just as is Gmail) by the huge and deep-pocketed Google, into doing his bidding. Here’s what YouTube told the Dump Bachmann people:

We have disabled the following material as a result of a third-party notification from You Can Run But You Cannot Hide Intl. claiming that this material is infringing:

Bradlee Dean on the Catholic Church
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TJS5fUxlOk

As DB’s Ken Avidor noted back in March, Bradlee Dean Smith is known for abusing copyright laws in order to silence critics:

“This is a case where people don’t want you to see something that’s embarassing to a politician they like, so they’re trying to make it go away,” Avidor says. “It’s Orwell’s memory hole.”

It’s interesting that the video YouTube cited as the reason for their giving the death penalty to Dump Bachmann is one where Dean is, according to those that have seen it, caught telling his devoted fans that Catholicism is riddled with perversion and “old guys checking out your daughters”.

This is not the sort of thing that Dean wants to have floating around as he tries to make nice with the local Catholic hierarchy in the first stages of the plan to ramp up their push for the anti-gay, anti-marriage-equality “Bradlee Dean” ballot measure — that’s the one that was supposed to have been added to the 2012 ballot on the same day he performed the invocation that went so disastrously that it nearly scuttled the bill and caused Republican House Speaker Kurt Zellers to have it struck from the official record. (Gee, wonder if YouTube will now suppress videos of that as well?)

Minnesota Republicans Frantically Rewriting Their Long History with Bradlee Dean

Posted by Phoenix Woman on May 29, 2011

Even as the same conservatives who cheered on Neal Boortz for saying that then-congresswoman Cynthia McKinney “looks like a ghetto slut”, “an explosion at a Brillo pad factory”, and “like Tina Turner peeing on an electric fence” have now suddenly and loudly rediscovered their moral compass by having Laura Ingraham, who Ed Schultz called a “right-wing slut”, complain about Schultz on FOX to accused sexual harasser Bill “Falafel” O’Reilly, we find the local conservatives and Republican operatives who have for years gladly and frequently associated with rabid anti-gay bigot preacher Bradlee Dean are now practicing saying “Bradlee Who?” with a straight face.

Thanks to the efforts of Ken Avidor, who has been documenting Bradlee Dean, his good friend Michele Bachmann, and several other local far-right looney tunes for the better part of a decade, I can now treat you to the varying ways in which local right-wing blogger and radio personality Mitch Berg has described Bradlee Dean over the years.

As noted in the screen shot above of a recent Tweet by Mr. Berg, who you may remember from an earlier posting, he’s been one of the many prominent Republicans practicing their “Bradlee Who?” routine lately. Yet Mr. Avidor was kind enough to point me in the direction of Mitch Berg’s postings over the years concerning Bradlee Dean at Berg’s “Shot in the Dark” blog, postings that belie this posture. Bradlee Dean’s Bigotry’s Running Out of Safe Havens

Posted by Phoenix Woman on May 26, 2011

In light of Thalweg’s post yesterday over at RenPost about the Triumph of the Bigots in Tennessee, I thought I’d present some happier news about how the revenue stream of a local set of very similar bigots just got negatively impacted.

Remember how I told you the other day about how one of anti-gay nutjob and self-styled preacher man Bradlee Dean’s people was so ticked off at Sally Jo Sorensen’s attempting to interview him at his table set up outside the Hutchinson Walmart that he actually tried to call the cops on her?

Well, guess what — he won’t be setting up shop in front of Walmart any more.

Turns out that in order to get permission to have tables in front of Walmarts, Bradlee Dean’s “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide Ministries” tried to hide the truth about its virulently bigoted mission from the Walmart executives in Arkansas — and once the Walmart executives found out the truth, they banned Dean’s outfit from setting up shop in front of any Walmart.

Arrest That Woman! She’s A Journalist!

Posted by Phoenix Woman on May 24, 2011

Courtesy of Bluestem Prairie.

Even as Kurt Zellers and the rest of the Minnesota Republican Party caucus at the Capitol were trying to scrub the record and remove all official evidence that they invited arch-nutjob Bradlee Dean to give the opening convocation on the day an anti-marriage-equality bill — henceforth known as “The Bradlee Dean Bill” — was supposed to be passed, one of Dean’s minions had a folding table set up in front of the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Hutchinson, looking to raise money for Dean’s “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide” ministry.

Bluestem Prairie’s Sally Jo Sorensen tried to interview the kid running the table, but was rebuffed — and you’ve got to watch the video at her site to see what happens next. Suffice to say that he, like Scott Walker, seems to have confused local law enforcement officials with his own palace guard.

Sergeant Schultz Media Calls RW Bigot/Disruptor “Citizen”, Ignores His Activism

Posted by Phoenix Woman on January 7, 2011

Our Sergeant Schultz legacy media knows nothing and sees nothing, it would seem. Continuing the tradition of ignoring the unsavory actions and connections of right-wing fringeoids like Michele Bachmann, the local media is pretending that a similarly loony anti-gay bigot and political activist is just a plain old “citizen”:

Governor Dayton is earning high marks for his civility to friend and foe alike at yesterday’s event, but the legacy media’s wan performance in identifying those who sought to disrupt the bully pulpit is another matter.

[…]

It’s approaching journalistic malfeasance for the press to lack the curiosity to ask a simple “five W” question about “who” that young man at the podium might be. It’s their duty to ask such questions, a responsibility implied in the freedom of the press.

[…]

After all, this “ministry” is no stranger to the political storyline that led to Dayton’s election; Jake MacMillian/ McAulay’s fellow “minister” Bradlee Dean played a strong supporting role last year. Dean’s radio approval of kindred spirits in murderous homophobia was a key piece in the “Target supports an anti-gay politician” narrative that led many to boycott the retailer.

Sally has more over at BSP — including this news that even though the legacy sloth media have yet to pick up on Jake MacMillian/McAulay’s ties to right-wing bigotry, at least one member of the local conservative blogosphere was alarmed enough by his poor showing at the podium to try and pretend that his appearance wasn’t orchestrated.
