Birth Control: What the GOP’s Pet Bishops Don’t Want You To Know

Posted by Phoenix Woman on February 12, 2012

Here’s some of what the GOP-allied US branch of the world’s largest organized group of pedophile enablers doesn’t want you to know:

There’s this: Catholic health group says it backs Obama compromise on birth control policy (That would be the Catholic Health Organization, which is headed by a nun, Sister Carol Keehan. Nuns seem to have a track record of being more sensible and compassionate in this regard than the (male) bishops whose pronouncements are given press coverage; of course, this compassion and good sense can get them in trouble with their misogynist bishop bosses.)

And this: How the Vatican Almost Embraced Birth Control (Of course, the Vatican has embraced what it calls “the rhythm method” and the mucus-testing method, except that neither of those actually works anywhere as well as real contraceptives such as condoms or birth-control pills — for one thing, both, especially the mucus method, require a level of familiarity and comfort with both one’s own body and that of one’s partner that is hard to achieve for Catholic couples reared to think of their bodies as icky and dirty. As the old joke goes, “What do you call a man and woman who practice the rhythm method? Parents.”)

And of course this: Catholic institutions here cover birth control (“Here” being New York state, the apparent model for Obama’s original proposal.)

Pass it on!

Throwing Blows In Beit Shemesh

Posted by Phoenix Woman on September 10, 2011

One of the former bosses of a friend of mine happens to be a hardcore Republican and Orthodox Jew who loves to tout how much more socially liberal Israel is compared to its Arab neighbors, who make it difficult for girls to attend school.

I wonder if he’s seen this article in Ha’aretz:

The escalation began yesterday with a conflict involving the girls school Orot Lebanot. Orot Lebanot is a religious Zionist school, meaning it is Orthodox but not ultra-Orthodox.

Yesterday, Ultra-Orthodox extremists blocked the path of the Orot Lebanot schoolgirls while they were on their way home. They surrounded the girls and shouted insults at them. Some residents and parents accompanying their children responded, and a fight broke out. It took nearly 45 minutes for the police to restore order, which they did without detaining or arresting any of the troublemakers.

Meanwhile, before the fight broke out, a fourth-grader at the nearby boys school, Orot Lebanim, also was injured while he was playing in the school yard during recess. According to the school principal, an ultra-Orthodox man threw stones at the boy, causing light injuries to his leg.

[…]

The Orot school serves religious girls from the Sheinfeld, Ramat Sharet, Ramat Beit Shemesh Aleph and other neighborhoods. Residents of Ramat Beit Shemesh Beit, populated by anti-Zionist extremists who are opposed to the new school, are demanding that the girls be removed. They claim that the girls, who range from 6 to 12 years old and who wear skirts, bring promiscuity to the neighborhood. The small police force guarding the school did not make much of an impression on the 40-or-so ultra-Orthodox Sicarii, who ambushed the girls after school at the top of the street, 300 meters from the school gate, and blocked both sidewalks.

They shouted “shiksa” [non-Jewish girl], “pritzas” [prostitute] and “gevalt” at the terrified girls. Parents who accompanied their daughters quarrelled with the Sicarii. Within a few minutes, some of the drivers who were passing by joined in, and a fistfight broke out.

Moshe Friedman, one of the organizers of the protests against the schoolgirls, told Haaretz that he was confident the school would be removed.

“They won’t be here,” he said. “According to Jewish law, it doesn’t matter that they are girls. The laws of modesty are an obligation from the age of 3. Their goal is to ruin the neighborhood; we won’t agree to tolerate it. They are backed by the government, but from our point of view this is a long-term battle. Even if it takes years, we’ll win in the end. Neither the government nor these girls will be here.”

Friedman promised further protests, including a large rally by the ultra-Orthodox population and daily marches through the neighborhood that would create, in his words, “victims on both sides.”

Israel on the whole may still be more socially liberal than its Arab neighbors, but it won’t be for long if people like Moshe Friedman are allowed to have their way — which they have had with growing frequency over the decades.

First Gilmore, Now Prosser: What Is It with Republican Hotheads and Women Hatred?

Posted by Phoenix Woman on June 25, 2011

Prosser cartoon by Mike Konopacki of the Madison, WI Capitol Times; Gilmore mugshot by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

Barely a week after local Republican insider and Minnesota Conservatives blogger John Gilmore was arrested for harassing a pair of Muslim women and their Caucasian pedicabbie friend, we hear that just over the border to the east Supreme Court Chief Justice (and former Republican Assemblyman) David Prosser was trying to choke a female colleague of his into submission:

Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser allegedly grabbed fellow Justice Ann Walsh Bradley around the neck in an argument in her chambers last week, according to at least three knowledgeable sources.

Details of the incident, investigated jointly by Wisconsin Public Radio and the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, remain sketchy. The sources spoke on the condition that they not be named, citing a need to preserve professional relationships.

They say an argument that occurred before the court’s release of a decision upholding a bill to curtail the collective bargaining rights of public employees culminated in a physical altercation in the presence of other justices. Bradley purportedly asked Prosser to leave her office, whereupon Prosser grabbed Bradley by the neck with both hands.

Charming. NOT.
