Franken gains in recount
Posted by Charles II on November 20, 2008
Here, via Nate Silver. Also, a comprehensive map of where the votes are coming from at the Strib.
With 15% of the vote recounted, Franken gains 43. Coleman and Franken both challenge ca. 100 ballots. Recounts are from Anoka, Beltrami, Bigstone, Carver, Chippewa, Clay, Cook, Dakota, Douglas, Faribault, Freeborn, a few from Hennepin, Houston, Hubbard, Itasca, Kandiyohi, Lake, Lincoln, McLeod, Nobles, Norman, Otter Tail, Pine, Pipestone, a few from Ramsey, Redwood, Sibley, St. Louis, Sibley, Stearns, Washington. See here for map. Overall, these are red precincts. Duluth and Minneapolis have not been counted, while a fraction of St. Paul has been recounted.
Advantage Franken.

Yup. And there’s not a thing Norm can do about it. The recount has started, he can’t stop it, and he’s going to lose it. When he’s lost ground in the Republican districts, he’s toast. Franken may well wind up with a 2000-vote margin at this rate.

Actually, looking at Nate’s post, half of Franken’s gains came from Ely and Eveleth, two Iron Range towns that are heavily-Democratic. But the other half did indeed come from Republican areas. And when the big cities get counted, Franken will do better still.

Nate said they were in Republican-leaning precincts.
I fully believe that Franken will win by several thousand, especially if the absentees are examined. Most of the undervotes were in Democratic precincts. They have already found that votes weren’t counted on one area having older counting machines. My guess is they’ll find that the counting machines in Democratic areas are less well calibrated.
